Because they feel threatened, and are sometimes unsure of their own self worth, and thus feel the need to take their anger and frustration on someone else.

I did like Bush at one point, right after 9/11 and the war on Afghanistan, because he handled the situations very well. However, not anymore, because he has dragged us into an unprovoked war with Iraq, making false claims that were not proven or supported.
