Please answer the poll. Like of dislike new AB?
I haven't been on AB for awhile, but I have been a member for several years, from the very original format to now. This is awful. If I wanted to go on facebook, I would go on facebook, I don't want "like" things on AB, I want to read answers.
When I left the first time I had my doubts and came back, but now I have nothing to come back for. Everything I liked about AB is gone. I was here for...

Why don't we ever think about air, until we don't have any?
In general, because we are automatic breathers. It's not something we have to think about. I think about it sometimes though, due to asthma.
You know, while I'm at it why don't I provide you with some useless information. Dolphins (as are I think all porpoises, although I'm not sure) are not automatic breathers. They have to consciously remember and make an effort to...

If your child was molested and they didn't remember it (sleeping, blocked it out etc.), would you tell them it happened?
Yes.
Even if a person does not remember being molested, the effects are still there. It would be frustrating and horrible to have those problems and not know where they were stemming from. Not to mention that most repressed memories come back.
I think that to recover from it, you'd have to know.
It'd be a hard thing to tell your child, but I would.

Vegetarians: Did a single event have a big impact on your decision to become one? (A vegger I know grew up on a farm and belatedly learned that the family had been eating a favorite pig she'd helped raise.)
I never really liked meat. When I was younger, I'd hardly eat it, i just didn't like the taste. And then I was walking home one day, in elementary school, and saw some kids mangling a worm on the sidewalk. I felt so much compassion for that little worm, that I decided it was my responsibility to respect all living creatures. I don't eat meat, drink milk, or eat any other dairy...

On thusday, 15% of Taco Bell's sales will go to helping teens graduate high school rather than drop out. With how low American high school standards are already, might as well just give them the damn diploma. Does anyone else think this is pointless?
No. I disagree with that mentality, "well it's so bad now, nothing we do is going to make it perfect, so let's not do anything at all."
I think it's good that people are trying to help motivate kids to graduate.

Why doesn't Child Protective Services let the kid choose whether to stay or go?
Because, in most cases, the kids would stay.
Children grow used to what they know. If abuse is all they've ever known, they won't understand that it is wrong. Also, and I say this from experience, there is a lot of fear in the thought of leaving. Fear of the parents reaction, but mostly of change. Going to a new environment, new people, can be very, very scary.

Does chatting with friends online cause us to feel less of a need to spend time with them in person? Good thing/bad thing?
I don't think that's it.
A lot of the reason I chat with friends online, or make friends online in the first place, is because I don't *have* any friends where I am.
Which, in turn, is partly because I don't communicate well in person (I'm quiet, I stutter a lot, etc.). The internet, and the friends I meet here, offer me a break from that.

With Obama's popularity down from 82% to 50% in two weeks...Does this mean the change is over? Or is it a clear indicator that this country needs more than 25% of its population to vote...maybe the other 75% voting could be the Change we need?
No, I don't think so. I think maybe the decline in popularity, is because, in whatever poll this is from, only the people who are unhappy with the election are bothering to show their dislike for Obama.
And also, as Firebrand said, the dissatisfied people should have not been so lazy, and gone and voted in the first place.

Contact the proper authorities (Police, CPS). There are professionals trained to talk to children and find out what has or hasn't taken place. In an investigation like this they will usually involve child psychologists, and handle this however they deem necessary. You shouldn't do this alone.

Have you ever seen the Nutcracker Ballet?
Yeah, loads of times.
My mum plays cello in the ballet orchestra, so ever since I was little i would get dragged a long to sit at her feet during the performances. I could see the stage from there, so I guess that counted. I've also seen it from the audience many times, because she gets free tickets.

What makes some abused children turn into violent criminals (serial killers, etc) and other abused children live relatively normal lives?
What makes children who aren't abused turn into violent criminals, and others to lead normal lives?
The same things apply. There might be more violent criminals who were abused, I don't know, but the same things affect this choice.
The two biggest ones I think, are character and influence.

My 6 and 4 year old boys told me that their baby sitter has been touching their penises, they told me that she pulls their pants down and touches them, should i tell her parents or call the police? do you think they made this up or is she really touching
First of all, I don't think four and six year old boys would make this up. I don't see any way other than this, that the idea would even enter their heads. Your children have confided in you and it's your job to protect them, not doubt their honesty.
Secondly, I would write down as best you can remember what your children said to you, and date it. This might help if you need...

How do you hide your cuts from self harm?
Well, I don't anymore. I used to, I did for several years. Then, I wore long sleeves, wrist bands, bracelets, long pants. Anything and everything to keep them covered. Then I realized that people didn't really care, and I stopped caring about what everyone else thought. I don't hide them anymore. they're a part of me. People should understand that.

My friend cuts herself but kind of tells everyone about it. She does not keep to herself or cover it up. Should I take her seriously?
It sounds to me like she is looking for attention. That being said though, if you know she is cutting herself (you've seen the scars/cuts) yes, you should take her very seriously. It doesn't seem to matter why, if she is cutting herself she needs support. There may be other emotional issues underlying her need for attention. Talk to her, and let her know you are serious.

I was in the first grade. "A Million Hands"

Joy; delight,
We all feel the excitement
We’re all here for the same thing
And in some strange way,
Nobody cares,
But everyone matters…
To everyone else.
Lifted up I feel ten, twenty,
A thousand hands,
Maybe even a million.
Moving me along, holding me...

My advice is to not meddle in self diagnosis. that's never good.
A lot of people think they are bipolar when they're not. plastered all over the internet are many lists of symptoms, but its different for everyone. you might have every one of these symptoms and not be bipolar, or you might have very few, and turn out to be.

Answer to:
Why does everyone think everyone else is bi-polar?
Thats a good question. At school, it is thrown around a lot. people say it as an insult, or as an explanation for why someone is hyper, or sad. It's ridiculous. people don't realize that its not fun, its not a diagnosis to be proud of, and its not something you throw around as a joke. i've seen kids even use it to get out of assignments. "sorry i didn't finish that sir,...

What exactly does it feel like to be bipolar?
It feels different to everyone that has it.
For me...When i'm manic, i'm not just out of control. i'm really irritable, and agitated. I have trouble sleeping. my brain seems to be going a mile a minute and i can't slow it down. i want to do things, see things, buy things, go places, but i can't because everyone else is either just too stupid or too slow to keep up...

Answer to:
I just found out i was bipolar, is there any support out there?
There is, there's lots of it. I would recommend alerting your family and friends. this is to get you some support, but also so they can keep an eye on you. often people with bipolar (er, myself included) will be on medication, and then feel that they're doing fine. they then think that they can do fine without the medication, so they stop taking it. that's not a good choice....

I suspect my daughter is bipolar. One moment she is happy and excited about something, and the next she is flying off the handle becoming really hateful over something trivial. Is this a common symptom?
It can be, although normally occurring mood swings (especially in teenagers) are often mistaken for symptoms of bipolar. bipolar is wrongly diagnosed quite often. Is your daughter a teenager? maybe she is just stressed out.
when i was diagnosed bipolar, one of the other things that the doctors looked at was the amount of sleep i was getting in my manic phases, and my depressions. maybe you...

I don't think so, and I certainly hope not. I know one person who stopped. all the others i know are trying, myself included. I think if you have a reason to stop, and it means enough to you, you can. cutting, like most addictions, can be beaten with determination and hope.

Why do men hit women? you can't generalize it at all. the same gender does not equal the same person. everyone is different. one man might hit a woman for one reason, and another might for a different reason.

Is suicide by slit wrists painful after the initial cut?
Extremely. the first cut is probably the least painful, because you're cutting through new skin. after that you're cutting through layer upon layer of skin and tissue and veins. it's rough, like slowly ripping apart your arm. it's excruciating, i've passed out while cutting my wrist before. believe me, not the way to go.

Do you think cutting is a sign someone is suicidal?
It honestly depends.
for me, cutting is my way of staying alive. it helps me control my feelings and a lot of times, it keeps me from committing suicide. it could however, be a sign that a person is suicidal, it really depends on the situation. and bear in mind also, that cutting can easily result in death, even if it was not intended.

I do not think that is a good idea. We already see questions that ramble on and on *cough* Am I Pregnant? *cough*, and we don't need them longer. I don't agree with us being so competitive, as this will always be a wonderful site, no matter how it compares with other sites.

I return the cart back where it belongs. I always see carts left out from people who are too lazy to return them. Have you ever thought that someone was faking (or WAY over-dramatising) something (like pain)? Then find out that they aren't faking, do you feel bad about it, or not because they fake things all the time? like the boy who cried wolf
I made that mistake once in elementary school. I even went so far as to call her an attention seeker. That cost me a friendship and I will never make that mistake again. so now I assume somebody is not faking or exaggerating something, and I try to believe what they are telling me.

Do you think wipping your kid with a belt is a good way to teach disclpine?
No, I don't think that it is a good way to teach discipline. It doesn't teach children discipline, it teaches them violence. They do something wrong, they get beaten. Is that the way you want them to grow up and live their lives? Someone does them a wrong and they resort to violence. I don't think that beating or whipping a child is acceptable.

If a friend on AB tells you that you can contact him/her anytime with any problem you may me going through, would you usually take him/her up on the offer. If not, why?
It depends. Usually I keep most things to myself, but occasionally when I need serious help I do reach out to AB asking for it. Many users have offered me their hand in friendship, and asked me to talk to them when I need something. Some of these offers I have accepted, others I have appreciated but other than that disregarded. It just depends on the person and the circumstance.

Im 14. when i grow up, i know it is farfetched, but i really want to be an actress on a sitcom. i know that i want the fame and everything, but how do i figure out if i want to be in it for the fame?
For me, acting (my lifelong dream) has always been about the passion and the happiness I feel when I'm doing it. I don't care about fame, I'd be perfectly content to be a theatre teacher at some highschool.
do you feel that same passion and love for acting? are you happy when you act?

You have to contend with them and learn how to deal with them, because like it or not, we all have differences and you need to accept that. and if you still dislike him, you shouldn't announce it...
Answer to:
Who was the last person you made cry? why?
I wrote a letter to a friend of mine apologizing for not being a better friend to her. Apparently it was so beautifully written that it made her tear up because she realised that she hadn't been the best friend either. she told me that she had never read something that opened her eyes so much to how good of a person she could be.

What are your needlessly obsessive habits or compulsions?
1. I have a horribly cluttered desk. but everything has to be in piles. and they have to be at least an inch from the edge of the table, and completely parallel to it. yes, I measure.
2. I have to straighten picture frames, they must hang correctly on the wall. even when I am over at other peoples houses, and I notice a crooked picture, I stand up, bring over a chair, and fix it.

Why would a loving god allow teenagers to die in car accidents, murders, and suicide?
That is not god. God gave us the freedom to choose, because we wanted freedom. now we have it, and as a result of that freedom, we make wrong decisions, and we make mistakes. There are evils in this world, yes. God allowed them to be there so he could show us that he was good and so we could appreciate the beauty that is here. there has to be a dark side, for there to be a side considered as...

Why is it that no matter how hard you try you still act like a parent you hated? I act like my mother sometimes and shes spiteful.
Because that is how you are brought up to be. if you dislike a parent, or if they are or were a bad influence on you, than it is natural that you'd want to be different. but who they are or were is a part of who you are because they have been your role models. nothing will change that.

What would you do if you overeacted to something a friend said about you and they no longer want anything to do with you? Is it worth trying to fix it even if the friendship was in its infancy?
I would definitely try to fix it. if i had made a mistake, i would attempt to make amends. friendship means a lot to me, and i value it greatly. i would risk a lot for it, and if that meant apologizing and losing some of my pride, it'd be worth it. and as for it being a beginning friendship, dont cast it aside because it is just starting. you never know what it could become. :)
