Answer to:
Do you live with someone who just doesn't understand clean? Someone who just does not see squalor as a problem? How do you deal with that?

Might be worth a thought.

Almost always. Every single purchase is a political and environmental choice. Cumulatively they matter a lot more than your vote does.
Answer to:
How strong is the link between heavy metals and autism?
Probably nil. About 90% is thought to be genetically caused, and 10% caused by environmental factors. Heavy metals are one of many possible but unproven environmental factors currently being investigated. There is no scientific evidence that the vaccine preservative thiomersal helps cause autism, for example.

I'm 15 years old, and dating a kid who smokes pot. Latley, his interests have become a part of mine, especially smoking pot. I've never considered it before, but the more and more that I think about it the more I want to try it. How should I go about it?
Don't rush into it, and make your own decisions, are the two best bits from the other answers I read. Compared to other drugs and maybe even prescription drugs like Prozac it's probably one of the safer ways to get high. The big downside is the possible legal consequences of getting caught. It won't help you to learn, but if used in moderation it probably won't kill you....

Old School Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder or New School with Johnny Depp?
Gene Wilder projects playful menace so much more proportionately than Depp does. Depp's performance is almost like a caricature of the original. Wilder's urbanity is much more satisfying than Depp's camp grimaces. Your mileage may, of course, vary.

We should not attend. We should withdraw our participation entirely. The Chinese only got awarded the Olympics on condition they cleaned up their act on human rights. It looks like they are having a laugh at our expense at the moment.

Ever dealt with a stubborn Scientologist in the workplace? How did you deal with a person recruiting at work? Especially when "Hell No!" is not working. Do you tell HR?
Not a scientologist, no, but I have always dealt with these losers by using their own tactics against them. For every time they proselytize, you put them down brutally in public. For every doe-eyed reference they make to the blessings of their retarded belief-system, you laugh out loud at their vaporings. It works really well and is quite fun for all the family.

Of course science is reliable. If you don't believe me, you would never get on a plane, buy something over the internet, drive a car or even wear clothes. Science never has or claims to have the final word, it is always provisional, and yet it has brought us to where we are today. If you don't agree, you certainly shouldn't be reading a website, you should be out in the woods...

An Australian passenger on the cruise ship Sea Diamond has described the tense wait to be rescued from the stricken vessel, after it ran aground on the rocks of Santorini Island in the Aegean. Have you ever been on a ship/boat that got in trouble?
Yes, a few years back I was on a ferry from Barcelona to Menorca. The crossing was meant to take 8 hours but we were stranded at sea by a storm and it took 36 hours instead, which was exciting and frustrating.

The Australian government's has launched an expensive anti-smacking campaign. Is it worth the money? Would you like your government to do something similar?
I pay no taxes in Australia, so the money doesn't worry me. Educating parents in good childcare seems like an effective investment in society though, so I don't think I have a problem with it in principle.

It was an easy choice. I had worked in a butcher's shop when I was younger, scrubbing up congealed fat from the floor and clotted blood from the liver trays. It won't work. From what I hear, these are nanogram quantities. You'd have to harvest the residues from millions of notes (bills as you call them), then separate out the cocaine from all the other contaminants... If you were prepared to do all that work, and had access to millions of dollars, I dare say there would be easier ways to get hold of a "toot of charlie". Sorry.

Historically it always has been. I can remember in my own lifetime the pound being worth as little as $1.50 and as much as $2.50. The current rate of $1.98 is the highest for years, and I think reflects the size of the U.S. balance of payments deficit.

What is the best guitar solo ever?
Gosh, there are so many. Quite a few of Frank Zappa's; maybe the one on the live version of Stevie's Spanking would be the best.
I also like bands who mocked the very idea of a guitar solo; the Buzzcocks' song What Do I Get has a marvellously ironic plodding solo that is a joy to behold.
Good question; bet it's a duplicate though.

It belittles the homophobe within his own warped value-system, without belittling you. It might depend on what the content of the files was. Does your college have an acceptable use policy?
At my school, this would probably be acceptable use if the 36MB were ringtones, but not if they were pornographic images, for example.

Real gross domestic product is increasingly criticised for its alleged failure to adequately measure the standard of living. To what extent do you think this critisim is valid?
The most obvious criticism is that it only measures that for which an objective monetary value can be fixed. That can be easy for goods and paid services, but it gets harder when you consider other things.
Education for example. If every school, college and university were closed down and the funding used to make weapons, that would probably be good for the GDP, at least in the short term. I...

There's a separation between church and state. But should there be a separation between state and entertainment, such as music and movies being involved with politics?
Absolutely not. Enforcing such a rule would be a far worse interference of politics in entertainment than whatever grievance you may have with Al Gore's film. It's a film; if you don't fancy it, don't go to see it. That is freedom of speech.

I admire them both, but aside from that it is hard to make a valid comparison.
Lenin was a man of action, who on the one hand helped free the Russian people from their oppression by the Tsars, but on the other set the scene for their oppression by the Soviet system.

What comes to mind when you hear the name HUGO CHAVEZ?
A very brave and charismatic leader who is standing up to American domination of the region. He is no doubt helped in this by the widespread perception that America is weak on the international stage just now, having disgraced itself in Iraq and having estranged many if not all of its former allies in Europe and elsewhere. I wish him well.

What was the point of pluto not being a planet in our solar system?
It turned out to be just one of a large group of very tiny bodies orbiting in the same region of space, so it was a choice between going back to 8 planets or accepting that there would be hundreds, with more being discovered all the time. It was wise to go for 8. It is just nomenclature; Pluto is still just as interesting as it ever was.

Yes, on several levels.
On a personal level, it is disrespectful to assume that someone who is an atheist can only hold that position from ignorance.
On a logical level, the "arguments" they tend to advance (generally based on logical fallacies or emotional quid pro quos) are ludicrous.
On a pragmatic level, they are more likely to annoy unbelievers than to convert them.

How do planes fly?
They fly by generating lift (usually from their wings) from the air. They do this by using forward speed to force air downwards with the shape and angle ("angle of attack") of the wings. A plane needs to keep enough airspeed over the wings to create enough lift to balance the weight, or it will stall (the airflow becomes turbulent) and sink.
Lift is a gift, thrust is a must.

Oh, mainly hundreds of years of scientific study, and scientists who have devoted their lives to this area. Especially since the 1990s such theories are highly testable, and so far, every single one of the good old 19th century ideas has checked out. Horizontal gene transfer has turned out to be more prevalent than suspected, which is interesting.

Let's get it into perspective. Ultimately, all cruelty to animals depends on our belief that animals feel pain and suffering the same way humans do. This is easy to see in a dog, a cat, or a horse. It is a lot harder to see in a cockroach or a silverfish, let alone a worm or a bacterium.
I would support animal experimentation only if and when it can be unequivocally demonstrated that it...

I wouldn't choose the word ministry, unless one considered one's whole life to be a ministry.

For the moment, Iraq and Afghanistan are the logical areas for the millions of Muslims who despise the USA to take revenge. They are doing just fine, so why would they go to the trouble and expense of another attack on the country itself.
I am absolutely sure that they could and will when they want to.

Do you get angry when you see someone driving while talking on a cellphone?
It's every bit as dangerous as being over the alcohol limit. It makes no difference if you use handsfree equipment. Yes, it makes me angry, as they may kill somebody. Here in the UK they have just increased the penalties for drivers who are caught using a handheld phone, and I support this.

That's a really good question. Unfortunately food companies have always resisted providing accurate information about the igredients of food until compelled to by law. I am in Africa. When we take a bottle of cool water from the refrigerator (12°C) and pour the water into a glass at room temperature (30°C) ice crystals form rapidly at the bottom of the water and spread quickly to the top. Why does this happen?
Your fridge is set too low. The water in the bottle has become supercooled (it is below 0, but unable to freeze because the bottle interior is too smooth).
When you pour it into the glass, imperfections in the glass allow freezing as it permits nucleation sites for crystals to start. Once started, as you can see, the process is very rapid.

Why are the plurals of mouse and louse, mice and lice but yet the plural of house is not hice?
The practice originates in German where changing the vowel is often used in pluralising. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_umlaut for a fuller explanation.
"Houses" is an unusual plural; as several others have pointed out, languuage evolves according to usage and not according to the rules of prescriptive grammarians, and so there are many seeming contradictions like this.

Pretty well. The cost in the UK is dependent on your salary. In effect it is added onto your income tax. We pay overall about half what the U.S. pays, per capita.
When I needed surgery I got it within hours, and a doctor's appointment is usually the next day or the day after. Doctors and patients, being human beings, are never totally happy, but I think it works well overall.

Haggling does not mean the same as bartering. I have often haggled with people who didn't speak English. This then became an example of barter, which is when you swap an object other than money for something.

Having a mountain in the city is rather cool as well, as is being almost at the confluence of the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Which is better, Monty Python or Ripping Yarns?
It isn't really a fair comparison. I love both, but Ripping Yarns was really a spin-off from Monty Python. As such it is more refined and I think its humour holds up better now.

How has your understanding of "God" changed through your life?
Very little. I suppose I understand more now about why I do not believe in God. Much of this is to do with the awful behaviour of people who claim to believe. I was conscious of this from a very young age, but almost every day I see more examples.

If you are an athiest why did you become one?
I never became an atheist, I always was one. I had a lot of help from my parents' scepticism about organised religion, which in turn probably came from some very negative examples; important members of both families were the sort of Christian hypocrites that Robert Burns so memorably parodied in "Holy Willie's Prayer".
I've since done my time in flirting with...

Are all Americans stupid or is it a myth?
Not all Americans are stupid, no. With 300 million of them that would be truly remarkable. You often find they can hold some truly warped ideas about the shape of the world and its origin, but it isn't their fault they have a rotten education system. Most Americans are OK by me. Unfortunately the lunatic fringe makes more noise than the sane ones, but you find that anywhere.

Do you think that it is right for Americans to stay in Iraq to build their government?
No, because they haven't built a credible government, but replaced an odious dictator with a much worse civil war. Ultimately it may be that long-term Iraq will split into three different nations.
There is no further role for American troops in Iraq except to act as bullet-catching sops to George Bush's pride.

What do you think of the statement “Men, given opportunity, are inherently rapists”?
It's about as helpful to the resolution of the ongoing war between the sexes as a statement like "All women are either whores or nuns". We are supposed to have moved beyond that sort of thing, and it annoys me, although I do understand it, when women repeat the sort of hateful stereotyping that they (rightly) accused men of in the bad old days.

How different do you think the political landscape would have been if the atomic/nuclear bombs were never invented?
I don't know how realistic a premise this is, much as I might wish for it. Mankind has always striven for more and more powerful weapons, and nuclear weapons are the most powerful it is posssible to make, so in my view it is inevitable that someone would create them.

How is suspending children from school supposed to be punishment?
It isn't intended as a punishment, more of a cooling-off period for the child and for the school as well. It should provide an opportunity for responsible parents to discuss their child's behaviour with their child and with the school. It doesn't always work, and is often quite disruptive, but alternatives are hard to see, unfortunately.

Why must an object traveling at the speed of light have infinite mass and require infinite energy? Where did the mass come from?
It's kind of hard to understand. Einstein's theories (which all check out perfectly so far in experiments) point out that things get heavier (more massive) as they go faster. As a little mass is equivalent to a lot of energy (E=mc^2), this comes from the hypothetical energy source you are using to accelerate the mass. Thus you would need even more energy (vastly more) to accelerate it...

I wouldn't automatically make that judgement. It depends which video game, for example. Does science believe in God?
Science does not "believe", as it is not fundamentally a belief system but a set of tools for finding out things. Most scientists do not believe in God, but then again many do. There is no scientific evidence for the existence of God, and it is difficult to see how there ever could be. Belief in God comes from faith and spirituality, areas (so far) unaddressed by science.

This is an old chestnut and may be described as the liberal paradox. As it is a paradox it cannot really be answered, other than to be aware that it is a paradox. Life is confusing sometimes.

Which would be worse, if your child came up to you and said he/she joined the military or said that he/she was gay?
Of course, the two are not mutually exclusive. I think the worst would be if they said they were gay AND were joining the military.
Either on its own would probably be a shock, but I would accept my child's nature and choices in either case.

An easy rule is; no fast food, no processed sugars, no processed fats. If you are not used to living that way you may find it hard for a while, but your body will thank you. We were not designed to eat "candy" and McDonald's, or to drink "soda" (the diet ones are just as bad); hence the obesity epidemic.

Anything that you call a "diet" is intrinsically likely only to provide short-term weight loss, for as soon as you stop your "diet", you are likely to put it on again.
Instead, make a lifelong decision to eliminate refined sugars and fats from what you eat, and take regular exercise. You will feel better and healthier for your entire life.

Why do people say they "slept" with someone when they really mean they had sex?
It is a euphemism. Many people regard talking about sex as being in some way rude, and this makes it easier for them to talk about one of the most fascinating human activities without breaking the taboo.

Absolutely not, it is a disgrace. Apart from all the ideas of social justice one might have, and the obscenity of them earning more in a week than many will earn in a lifetime, it spoils the sport when they are just playing for money.

A lot of it is to do with the needless waste of life in Iraq. America wasted the sympathy they briefly had for the atrocity on 9/11, apparently through contempt for processes they had previously said they supported. The UN was on the way to confirming that there were no WMD there, and Iraq had no connection with 9/11. Not just the fact of the invasion, but the manner of it (prisoner abuse,...

Of course. Why on earth not? In my country, the "underage" only applies to drinking in bars, which you cannot do until you are 18. You can drink in the home at any age, and enlightened parents (including mine) let their children drink in moderation when they are mature enough to (I was 15 or so).

As imperial countries have been discovering afresh since the Romans had trouble with a rabble-rouser called Jesus, no nation-state, however powerful, can occupy land long-term on which it is not welcome, if enough of the locals want them to leave. Military power is not of much use against insurgents who are fighting for their own land.

Galloping hypochondria is a very common, usually mild, form of mental illness. It may derive from the way a person was brought up, or from a lack of self-esteem as an adult. Only if demonstrations count. If so, I was on several of the anti-war rallies during 2002 and 2003, and in 2005 went on the G8 demo.

Is there a world record for the roundest human being?
I don't think so, but we desperately need more euphemisms for the super-sized. "Obese" is far too medical, and the old standbys like "plump" and "stout" seem inadequate to describe today's salad-dodgers. Any suggestions?

I found condensation under the oil fill cap on my 2002 silverado 4.8L Vortec engine, could this mean trouble?
If you've been doing a lot of very short trips this is fairly common. It's because the engine never fully warms up. If that isn't it, I'd be slightly worried about a burst gasket. Get it compression tested, maybe.

Answer to:
If you buy any car, then what kind of car would you buy?
I'd like a Concorde; now that they have retired the fleet (just after a major safety upgrade), there are a lot of them just sitting about in museums which could still be flying. It would have to come with an unlimited supply of fuel as they are thirsty beasts.
Maybe an F-111 for those weekend breaks, one of the clean recon versions. Makes taking holiday snaps mpore interesting.

Answer to:
Why do people think that those little white orbs in pictures are evidence of ghosts?
People have a need to seek out mystery in life. It is a natural reaction to life's complexity. If they don't go for traditional organised religion, they may construct a belief in UFOs, Nessie, or ghosts. Of course, as with ball lightning, it may turn out to be something interesting, but I doubt it.

What's your computer brand of choice?
Custom-built. I did own an HP for a while and it was all right. Unfortunately it came with Windows ME installed, and a whole other bunch of useless rubbish. Once I reformatted it it ran for years.
You get the best buys though by buying the best components you can afford and building your own system.

Either a sailing boat or a canal barge. Cruising through canals is said to be very relaxing, and I did a bit of sailing when I was younger.

These days we fuel our own cars, do you remember when an attendant did it for you?
I used to be a petrol pump attendant when I was at school. It was nice sometimes chatting to the customers, but the smell of the diesel was yucky. We changed over in 1980 or so, so it is a distant memory, but I do remember it.

Answer to:
Do you believe in interracial marriage?
"Race" is only a social construct, not a scientific idea. I feel so sorry for people who allow it to dominate their thinking about the world. If two people get married, how does it affect anybody else, and why on earth would anyone else be bothered by it?

I will play it if and when it comes out for PC. I am content to wait, because although I have owned and played every single version of GTA over the years, I actually prefer Call of Duty 2 now.

Answer to:
Are men and women equalls?
They are not "equal" because of the various sexual differences, mainly related to pregnancy and childbirth, men's (general) greater size and strength, and men's shorter life expectancy. Men are usually more likely to be assaulted, contrary to popular belief.
They are "equals", as one sex cannot exist without the other and therefore they are of equal importance....

In some countries it is mandatory to serve in the military for approx. 18-24 mos., after high school. Do you think that the US should adopt this policy? Why or why not?
It didn't prove a success the last time it was tried during the Vietnam war. On the other hand, it might be necessary if the Iraq war is allowed to continue. Conscripts don't fight as well as professional soldiers.

What are your favourite, or most memorable, lines from a poem?
A Healthy Meal
The gourmet tastes the secret dreams of cows
tossed lightly in garlic. Behind the green door, swish
of oxtails languish on an earthen dish. Here are
wishbones and pinkies; fingerbowls will absolve guilt.
Capped teeth chatter to a kidney or at the breast
of something which once flew. These hearts knew
no love and on their beds of saffron rice they lie
beyond reproach....

Who here agrees with the war going on in iraq?
Few people in the Western democracies will still publicly defend it. On the other hand, I imagine it is still very popular among Iranians as it gives their country the chance to humiliate America at little risk to themselves.

It's a sop to address wrongs in a racist society. I don't think it's an effective one.
Answer to:
Isn't it kind of racest that almost every race here in america has spacific college funds set up just for them all but whites?
First of all, "race" isn't a properly-defined scientific concept so much as a social construct. We all share far more characteristics in common with people of different skin colour than the differences beween us. That being said, I believe Whites are still a majority in the U.S.; why on earth would they need affirmative action taken to protect their rights?
If what you are...

Far too much, in a country that used to pride itself on keeping church and state separate.
Far too little, in that many if not most of its foreign policy decisions over the last 50 years have gone directly against the precepts of "the Good Book".

If the US government were to move the capital, which city would be best suited to move it to?
Maybe somewhere like Omaha, Nebraska. Geologically stable and well away from the coastlines which will be inundated as the global sea level rises.
Otherwise I'd go for Austin, Texas, if you plan to keep electing Texans to the office of President.

Why is America obsessed with sports?
I don't think America is obsessed with sports. The world's most popular sport is hardly played there, and the special sports played in America are hardly played anywhere else.
