Answer to:
The earth orbits around the sun at approx. 18642mph. A shuttle uses approx 14,500mph to get out off earths gravitational pull. When a shuttle launches out off earths orbit, does it add on earths orbital speed or stay its own and why or why not?
Yes it does add on the earth's orbital speed. HOWEVER, since the shuttle ends up orbiting earth, which travels at the orbital speed, this boost is essentially useless. If the shuttle didn't add on earth's obital speed, the moment it left earth, it would just stay in one spot, while the earth moved away from it along its orbit.
However, the shuttle does use the earth's...
Answer to:
What happens to the initial reaction rate as substrate concentration increases?
The reaction rate is given by [substrate]^N, where [substrate] is the concentration of the substrate and N is the stoichiometric coefficient in fron tof the substrate in the reaction equation.
Ie, CH4+2O2 -> CO2+2H2O
the reaction rate is a constant * [CH4]^1 * [O2]^2
More generally
aA+bB+cC->products
reaction rate is k*[A]^a*[B]^b*[C]^c
Answer to:
A string, fixed at both ends vibrates at a frequency of 12Hz with a standing transverse wave pattern containing 3 loops. What frequency is needed if the standing wave pattern is to contain 4 loops? A. 12Hz B. 16 Hz C. 36 Hz D. 48Hz
You require 16Hz. The fundamental frequency of the string is 4Hz, which will give 1 loop. 8Hz, the first harmonic, gives 2 loops. 12 gives 3 loops, and 16 gives 4 loops.

My Wish is a really good choice (the lyrics fit perfectly). However, it doesn't really invoke "happiness". Also, the music is too heavy in my opinion for a background music for a slideshow about talent. It would be more fitting for, say, a tribute slideshow.
My recommendation is "Happy Together" by The Turtles. The lyrics are kind of like a love song...but it's...
Answer to:
Do Khaki and light purple go together?
Yes they do. An easy way to tell if 2 colours go together is looking at a colour wheel. If the 2 colours are on opposite sides, they complement each other (ie go well together). The colour wheel is yellow-red-blue. Khaki is beige, so it's close to yellow. Purple is the combination of red and blue. So purple is approximately on the opposite side as beige. Thus, they go together.

Are all atoms the same size?
No. An atom with more electrons will have electrons in higher energy orbitals, which are larger physically. However, for a given orbital, the more electrons are in it, the smaller the orbital. Thus, if you look at a periodic table of elements, for each row, the size of the atom decreases going left to right. However, the size of the atom increases going top to bottom. Thus, the smallest atom is...

What, besides a car, would be considered a composite structure. Would plexiglass or bulletproof glass?
Materials such as plexiglass or bulletproof glass would all be considered composite *materials*, though not as composite *structures*. Thus, not even a car would be considered a composite structure. Although it uses many materials (steel, glass,...
Answer to:
Electrical can you give me an explanation why a back EMF is developed across a coil when an alternating potential differance is applied across it?
It's because of Faraday's induction law. A current through a coil will induce a magnetic field. The magnetic field will attempt to resist the initial flow of current (due to conservation of energy). This causes the back EMF.

I agree with OldSchool. It's all about compromise. Remember the saying that the best defence is a good offense. Although not to be taken very literally, it is still somewhat true. Yes, soldiers need to be protected by armour. However, even the thickest armour can be penetrated. Shooting the enemy is a much better way of staying alive than hiding in a protective shell.

I suggest just twisting. With dental floss, whether you braid or simply twist will not make any difference at all in terms of performance. It is so large, in fact, that door frames to the dome must have special structural support to prevent them from being blown out.

In Manhattan, New York, there is what is known as "air space". That is, there are all kinds of regulations about how high the buildings can go. For example, Rockefeller owed a large portion of land in Manhattan's downtown. On most of that...

NO! In fact, it is the exact opposite of what could be considered an ideal gas. The ideal gas approximation is best used on "hot vacuums". High temperature and low pressure. You have very low temperature and very high pressure. The ideal gas approximation will be nowhere near the real value. Try Virial's equation or Van der Waals equation instead.

Could commercial airplanes such as the Boeing 747 or A380 refuel in midair?
They could, but there are several problems:
1. They need an aerial refuelling system
2. It is expensive (now you need a tanker as well, which requires its own fuel, maintenance costs, crew, etc)
3. Many large airplanes fly overseas. This means the tanker would have to follow the 747 all the way. Might as well have the 747 carry its own fuel.

This one's not the funniest joke i've heard, but its definitely the most nerdy. If you don't understand, it's OK.

I have windows XP prof on a laptop with 17GB. I am using about 14GB of it. I am NOT able to delete or copy anything in Windows Explorer (not even right mouse . It just hangs (hour glass);eventually the screen goes blank for a few seconds. Why? Virus? Help
Also, operating systems require overhead to run. Windows XP pro and new operating systems especially require a lot of overhead. It is possible the 3GB that seem "free" are being used by the OS. Try getting a larger hard drive. For XP pro, I suggest at least 40GB

I have install a linksys router but it will not reconize my dsl internet connection. How do I resolve this issue?
First, check that the cables are plugged into the correct ports.
The phone line should plug into your modem. Your modem should have a LAN cable that plugs into your router. Some routers have a special port just for internet, while others treat the internet like another computer. Make sure it is connected properly.

What's the difference between digital and optical zoom?
To add to the other answers:
Never use digital zoom. If you decide later that you actually only want that one part of the picture, you can always crop it and enlarge it on your computer. However, if you use digital zoom, and you later decide that you wanted the rest of the scene, then there's nothing you can do.

WHY the heck do the AA batteries go dead after about 30 seconds of using my digital camera??? (Samsung digimax s600) What should I do?
I have had the same problem. For me, it was probably because the camera was very very old, and was very inefficient at power consumption. For you, there may be a short circuit somewhere. Are the batteries very hot when you take them out dead?
Answer to:
How many "megapixels" should I look for in a camera for casual use (vacation shots, parties, etc.)?
If you are looking for a camera for casual use, you shouldn't be concerned about megapixels. Almost all camera's between 100 and 300 dollars will give you good resolution. Instead, you should be more focused on ease of use. For casual camera, you should probably buy more of a "point and shoot" camera, rather than a very complicated one with a lot of settings you will never use.

Lots of electronics.

In the game of Big 2, If I play three cards of the same value, can the other person beat that with a for of a kind and a single card? My three cards do not include a double, just three.
No, because the 2 hands are of different types. The one you played is of the triple type, while the other one is of the "poker hand" type (ie full house, flush, straight, etc). Generally, to beat a hand, you must play something of the same type. The only exception i've ever seen is that a 2 can beat a double (except a double 2). Some people play by this rule, but most people...

Does anybody know how to bend the fabric of time and reality, besides reaching light speed and stopping time? just wonderin.
Time is actually just light, and light bends with space, hence the term "spacetime". Thus, anything that bends space will "bend" time. The best example is a black hole. Because it has such a high mass, it produces a lot of gravity. Gravity is the bending of space. For a black hole, its gravity is so great that even light can not escape. Thus, inside a black hole, light does...

How can i record from radio to my computer hard drive
Yes you can. You need two things. First, you need a cable that will go from the headphone jack on the radio (most radios have them) to the microphone jack on your computer. This cable looks like a headphone cable, but with the connector on both ends. This will allow the sound to go from the radio to your computer, without background noise. Then, you will need software to record the music. You...

If Microsoft products have so many problems, why do most people use Microsoft products?
A lot of people say that Mircosoft products suck. This is simply not true. The only reason why they SEEM to suck is because more people are using them. Thus, there is a greater chance someone will stumble upon an error. Also, I must agree that to a certain extent, it is that people are too lazy to change. Also, there is the issue of compatibility with most other computers.

Answer to:
Will it ever be possible for trains to exceed the speed of sound?
The problem with trains is that they are extremely non-aerodynamic. Even the high speed bullet trains, with their pointed noses, produce much more drag than a typical fighter airplane. Also, at such high speeds, drag increases as a function of speed squared. So going twice as fast would produce 4 times more drag. At supersonic speeds, This would be a lot of drag, that the train would have to...

Answer to:
Could someone make a full-size train that uses a wind-up spring to power it?
Also, a spring is not very efficient at storing energy, compared to gasoline or diesel fuel. Also, there is a question of safety. If fuel is left on its own, it will not do anything (ie explode). However, a wound up spring, if left on its own, would unwind instantly. In order to power a train, the spring would have to be wound up really tight. There would be thousands or millions of joules of...

I would like to expand on this question. Although most liquids will flow downhill, some liquids are "special". What is a "dog fight"?
I mostly agree with Andersen777. However, I must point out that dogfights are not largely out of existence. It was once thought that the effectiveness of Sidewinder and AMRAAM missiles would make cannons (a really big machine gun) obsolete. However, this has not been the case, especially since MiG's continue to be designed as excellent dogfighters. Thus, most of the new generation fighters...

What g-forces can jet pilots take, and can this amount increase with training?
To add to the answer by anonymous, the number of G's you can sustain can and will increase with training. First of all, pilots are trained to tense their muscules to squeeze blood to the brain when you are experiencing positive G's (where you are pressed to your seat). Additionally, regular exercise will make your heart stronger and more able to pump blood to your brain.

Answer to:
How come airships (or blimps) made today aren't as large as the airships of yore?
Blimps are only used now to make a platform that will float in the air. A helicopter uses a lot of fuel to hover. For these purposes, blimps are the cheapest. There is no need to use blimps as a form of transit, such as the huge Hindenburg (it burned down) because jets are much better.
Answer to:
Couldn't it be made possible for the pilot to gas all passengers to sleep to prevent a hi-jacking or plane takeover? Even at the possible loss of a baby, or young child on board, wouldn't this be better than arming pilots with guns?
It would be ineffective. If airliners started using gas, then terrorists would simply bring gas masks with them. Even if border security stopped allowing gas masks on airplanes to counter this, think about it this way. If they can sneak weapons onto a plane, a gas mask is no problem.

I read in Popular Science that research is being done to anchor cables from Earth to outer space, and having cable climbing Robot lifts to ferry passengers and goods. I checked it wasn't the April 1st issue. Is this feat possible, surely not.
Yes it is possible--with some advanced technology. This technology is microtubules. Actually, microtubules have been around for thousands of years. Your cells have microtubules to keep their shape. They are extremely, extremely strong, and the cable you are talking about would be made of this material. The only problem is, scientists have yet to find a cheap way to manufacture these...
Answer to:
On average, how many commercial flights DON'T crash every day?
For the person who asked the question:
Rarely do planes crash. The only reason why we hear about them is that because it is such a rare event, the media makes a big fuss about it. I have read several times that if you are going on a flight, the chance of your plane having an accident is less than the chance of your car being involved in an accident while you are driving to the airport.
Answer to:
Can an jet airliner jettison a jet engine or more during flight?
No. One reason is because they are extremely expensive. Additionally, there is no need to. If the engine does catch on fire, the pilot/copilot can turn off fuel supply to that engine, and the fire will burn itself out in a matter of seconds.

Answer to:
When you travelling in a jet plane, why do objects on the ground look as though they are still or moving slowly?
This is kind of a continuation of ErikaJ's answer. The reason why things seem to move slowly is because of how your eye works. First of all, the eye can not detect distance. If you close one eye, there is no way for you to determine whether it is a large box far away or a small box up close, unless there are other visual clues. How humans percieve distance is because there are two eyes....
Answer to:
Can a full-size helicopter fly upside down?
The answer is yes and no. Many military helicopters can perform a vertical loop, where they are inverted momentarily. However, I do not believe there are any helicopters that can sustain inverted flight. The reason for this is not that the rotors would push air upward--the rotors can be rotated to direct air downward. The reason why it can not fly upside down is because the rotors are very...
