Usually it's the ignition. Check for cracks (visually) in the distributor cap, some high voltage may be leaking to a cylinder wire and causing misfire. Or worse yet, you have a burned valve. Try a compression test to check this.

Try looking for vacuum leaks, especially near that intake runner and gasket, check vacuum hoses(pinch them off and look for rpm change) near that runner. It sounds like one side of the rebuilt carb is not supplying enough fuel. If its a Quadrajet, one (of 2) of the fuel pick up tubes for that...

I really need more info, what was the situation before this event, was it running fine or you just put in this motor? I had the same motor in my 1980 El Camino, excellet power, long piston dwell. Anyway, if this is a new install, you've probably put the Ignition distributor 180 degrees out....
