Do you feel that violence in entertainment makes teens act more violently, or don't you think so?
No and Yes:
No beacuse I feel you have to give young people a lot more credit with being to understand violence within the context it is shown. Where it's satirical or deliberately OTT than it is plain patronising to say that they can't understand the difference and that it makes them violent.
However, I feel that one of the reasons that youth violence is so prevalant in Western...

Dutch students have invented powdered alcohol which they say can be sold legally to minors. The latest innovation in inebriation, called Booz2Go, is available in 20-gramme packets that cost a euro to a euro and a half. Does this development concern you?
I'm a bit sceptical of passing judgement, as from what I've heard, the drinking culture in the Netherlands differs to that of the UK / Aus. I know the drinking age is 16 and they are a lot more liberal about drugs etc. So I'm not overly concerned; maybe if it's an actual development and begins to make its way to our shores, i'll be a bit more concerned- I'm sure I...

Yes. The levels of interest are far too high and are just an excuse to keep less developed countries under the thumb- by preventing them from developing economically and by insisting that they follow certain models of governance- i.e. through privatisation of resources that affect the poorest most.
It's not likely to happen though- especially as certain rich countries are reliant on the...

No- it should be a fundamental right of a woman to choose when she wants to have children and I think legally requiring a teen to gain parental consent goes against that- it removes the decision from her hands.

Is it wrong to flirt with your boyfriends bestfriend?
It depends on how 'bad' the flirting is and how strong your relationship with your boyfriend is. My bestfriend and my boyfriend are right flirts, always calling each other sexy and gorgeous- it doesn't bother me in the slightest because i know that it wouldn't go any further. (and if it did, i'd kill em!)
On the other hand, there is no way I'd flirt with my...

The Iranians who captured the Royal Navy personnel have offered to let the only female crew member go. Does that count as sexism, and if yes, against the female officer, or her male companions?
I haven't seen that the Iranians are prepared to let Turney go, but then I've only checked the bbc website today. Even if they haven't agreed to let her go, I'm answering the question because there is definitely a subtext to the reporting of the crisis, that it is something to do with gender equality.
Suppose the Iranians are releasing Turney purely becuase she is a...
Answer to:
The life on our planet is "carbon based" - are carbon based life forms all that can exist?
Science fiction often speculates as to whether aliens would have the same basic structures as life on earth. For instance, Ben Bova writes about the first explorations of other planets in his fictional Grand Tour series, the life they find on Venus (in his books there are traces of life on all of our neighbouring planets!) is sulphite based rather than carbon based.
Obviously we can't...

My parents can be very prejudiced, they tend to believe everything the Sun says about illegal immigrants stealing all our resources and all Asians are terrorists. I went once with a group of friends after we finished our Alevel exams- it was great fun! How do you define "World Peace"? What would it look like? Is it merely a lack of conflict, or does it require more?
I'd define world peace as a world which has the global capacity to defend everyone's human rights. I don't think that just lacking conflict could be termed world peace if there was still wide spread suffering and exploitation.
It'd require something that could go over and above the nation state's policies to protect the interests of the world's citizens, not...

I remember at sixth form being taught that since the end of WW2 there have been only 82 days free of war. I don't know how true this is and on what basis it was made. (e.g. the Falklands wasn't considered a war)
Also, I wonder if there have been any war-free days in the intervening 3 or 4 years.

Some nights I lie awake for hours thinking about all sorts of things. If it's something that I need to do the next day I'll have to get up and write it down, which helps a little.
Most helpful for me is if I hum or sing to myself, it gets so I can't tell if the songs in my head or out loud and by then I'm well on my way to sleep. If I sing camp songs it leads to happy...

I quit weighing myself about two years ago and am never going to weigh myself again. I've not suffered from an eating disorder, but I'm very funny about food. I don't want to encourage myself or those I live with to feel under pressure about their weight, it's not a healthy state of mind to be in.

absolutely. I wouldn't want to completley start anew in some areas, I'd like my nice shiny degree to still be recognised, but I sometimes I think that running away and starting afresh in terms of personal relationships would be so much easier than trying to fix the ones that are ruined. Why are magazines full of skinny women when the real world is full or normal curvy beautiful women?
To make normal women feel so inadequate that they can't achieve an ideal of beauty that they spend a fortune on things to make them feel better about their appearance, from spot cream to a boob job. This makes advertisers and health and beauty corporations rich and allows men to rule the world while the women are busy feeling inadequate and drinking slimfast.

What do abortion clinics do with the dead babies?
Hospitals usually have arrangements with local cremartoriams for the disposal of the tissue from an abortion. I think this acknowledges both that it's not just "medical waste" and that it's not a fully formed human. I've seen the 'product' of a typical abortion, and it's in no way recognisable as a "dead baby" as the question suggests.

I disagree with the leading nature of the question, but I'll answer anyway:

Liberals are more likely to want to introduce welfare policies and reform for minoritised groups. Some see this as an attack on traditional...

I don't think so, even if the parent is worried that their child is up to activities that are bad for them e.g. getting involved in gangs or something. Why do so many assume that buying tampons or maxipads is embarrassing?
Because society tells us that our periods are something to be embarrassed about in order to sell us tampons that look like sweets, smell like flowers and have ridiculously euphemistic names.
People aren't just embarrassed by things inside their own minds, it's part of their interactions with others and what is considered taboo.

Which remade movie is better than the original?
The Sound of Music is a remake of an earlier version that is probably unheard of outside Austria (prove me wrong someone?) Whilst the remake is dieously innaccurate and contrived, it's so much more wonderfully charming than the original (although it helps that the remake is in English, much more charming than German!)

Is there a way you prevent yourself from blushing when around a person you have a serious crush on?
I used to blush terribly at a lot of things, when teachers picked me in class, when posing for photos or if it took me a while to find the right change in the shop. Then people would say "you're blushing" and I'd go even redder-it's horrible isn't it?!.
I used to deliberately put myself in positions I would find embarassing and this had a huge effect in stopping...

Do you think Affirmative Action is still neessary? Do you believe in it?
Yes, I think affirmative action is necessary because we still live in a grossly inequal world. For an equal society it must be representational of its members and whilst there have been great moves to stop discrimination against minority groups, the differences in power still exist and still do not represent all the members equally- (it seems difficult to imagine the UK having a gay or Muslim...

Not being a specialist in environmental science I can't say that we are having or approaching a climate crisis at all. I doubt there will be conclusive proof of climate change in my lifetime.

Why do people shake when they are frightened?
It's to do with your body's reaction to fear, you get a rush of the hormone adrenaline which makes your body more able to react quickly in a stressful situation. One of the problems with this biological response is that it can occur when you dont really need it to, for...

Why do most modern cultures categorize the female nipple as something to be hidden?
I dont think its a case of following tradition, as cultures do not come from common beginnings. The rules of what is attractive and how each gender is expected to behave are culturally determined.
