Answer to:
Would you buy a coffin from Walmart?
No. You have to buy them on the Internet. They don't have them in the stores.\
Then you have to allow 48 hours for delivery and if it arrives damaged you have a real hassle trying to get another. Meanwhile, you have to postpone whatever funeral activities you have planned.
I'd buy from the funeral home. Avoid the hassle.

I think that American funeral traditions are often overblown, overly complex, and often overly sentimental to the point of silly goofiness. What do you think?
To each their own is the right thing...and even with cremation, you can have a traditional funeral, with embalming, viewing, casket, a wake and a full ceremony...it's whatever the individual wants. And in most states, that individual is the next-of-kin, not the deceased.

When I found my brother dead, he had a thick (perhaps foamy or grainy looking) mustard colored substance from his mouth . He was dead at least 12 hours before being found. Does anyone know what the substance was?
This is called "purge" and is expelled from lungs or stomach by the pressure of decomposition gasses inside the body. It is a frequent sight a few hours after death occurs. Embalming usually eliminates it.

Why don't obituaries in the newspaper mention the cause of death of the decedent? They mention the date of death, the age of the person and the survivng next-of-kin, but rarely do they say why the person died. Why not?
The surviving family, particularly the next-of-kin, determines what appears in the obituary,. If they want to share the cause of death (if they even know it at the time) they will do so. Otherwise, it doesn't appear.

Answer to:
This is a very scary but serious reality some of us have thought about at one point during our lifespan, what happens in the funeral home to our body after we die, do they remove our organs, do they inject us something, what happens?
Depending upon how your body is to be disposed of, it may receive little attention or it may be preserved by injection of embalming chemicals, dressed and placed in a casket for viewing by your family and friends.
Any organ removal is done at the hospital by an organ transplant team, sometimes flown in from elsewhere.Only after that is the body released to the funeral home.

Is it common practice for funeral home to embalm any body for which cremation is planned? No viewing was planned and the procedure was done within 24 hours. There answer was "you were not charged". Money was not the issue, only the practice.
In the United States, the next-of-kin must be asked for permission for embalming. The law states you do not have to pay for embalming you do not authorize.
In the case you mention, the cremation was done within 24 hours. Embalming is not needed for preservation for that period of time. In some states, the cremation cannot take place for at least 24 hours after death.

Answer to:
Ok, say a married couple been together for almost all their lives, and the woman's husband dies, and she gets remarried before she dies, who does she get buried with the old husband or the new husband?
It depends upon the wishes of those involved. In many second marriages, where the first spouse of each died, the parties are buried next to their first spouses. The simple reason is that, usually, there is a double headstone bearing the names of both the husband and the wife; so, the survivor, when he or she dies, has a ready-made tombstone bearing his/her name ready and waiting.

Your organs will not be removed without the ok of your next-of-kin. So, tell that person your wishes and he/she will block the organ removal by declining to give permission. What's on your license doesn't matter. Even if you don't have it marked on your license, your next-of-kin will likely still be approached about donating your organs.

No military service wants anyone who is not self-disciplined and who shuns instruction, including school. Most service members attend schools to learn their jobs. If you don't like school, you will not like the military. If you can't hack school, you won't be able to hack the military.

A remembrance of an event, such as a war, is not honouring that event. To adequately honour the participants, the war itself must be remembered. There should be no time limit for such remembrances.

When do they mow the grass in cemeteries? I have never seen a riding lawnmower doing its thing over the gravesites, and I suppose that's on purpose.
In large cemeteries, mowing is usually continuous, by the time they get through the whole area, it's time to start over. Smaller cemeteries may be mowed once a week or once a month. Sometimes the schedule depends upon whether they have the money to pay for mowing. Many smaller cemeteries are strapped for funds.

In most cases you must make prior arrangements with the institution to which you want your body donated. Otherwise, what you want done will not happen.

Is it possible for someone to have a heart attack and die in their sleep? My Dad died from atherosclorosis a month ago, and when i found him dead, he looked like he'd been asleep. His mouth was open though, and his eyes were partially open. Why is that?
Dying in one's sleep is quite common. The open mouth and eyelids come from the muscles relaxing after death. If you look closely at a person asleep, you may see his/her mouth open a bit, as well as the eyelids (not wide open, but parted).

More people are opting for direct cremation, which is usually less costly than traditional funeral services. Many families select less expensive caskets and use fewer services than in better times. There can be. The terms are used to describe different things by different people.
Usually, at least in the USA, the term vault refers to a protective container to enclose the casket in the grave. A crypt, on the other hand, usually refers to a burial chamber in a mausoleum, or an above-ground tomb.

More bodies can be buried in an acre than you might think. In some countries graves are reused after several years. There are some cemeteries with above-ground tombs where the contents are pushed into a chute at the back end ever so often. The chute leads to an underground pit. The burial chamber is then ready for another occupant.

My aunt, who is 60 years old, got a speeding ticket for going 5 miles over the limit... the officer yelled at her then gave her another ticket for getting out of her car. I will be going to both court dates with her this week. Any advice?
5 miles over the speed limit IS speeding. She is guilty. Most jurisdictions will allow you to pay a minimum fine ahead of the court date. Do it. if there is still time. The getting-out-of-the-car charge may be dropped if she pays the speeding fine before the court date.
60 years of age is no longer "elderly".

What do you think of the allegations in the documentary "Zeitgeist", that the Lusitania was knowingly sent into dangerous waters, and the Pearl Harbour attacks were provoked, as excuses to enter WW1 and WW2?
I believe that the US government expected that the

Whether there was an active conspiracy to bring about those events is still unsettled, although what happened led to our entry into war on both occasions.
In each instance, the leadership wanted to enter the war, but much of the populace...

I was watching on t.v. where there was a situation where there was a lady dead in an apartment bldg for 6 months before anyone noticed, how is this possible?
The odor of a decomposing body is quite noticeable, but there are numerous cases where bodies have lain for months and no one has noticed. Or, if they did smell the odor, they took no action...Maybe they didn't want to get involved. Also, after some time, the odor dissipates, so maybe that is what happened in this case.

Six feet deep was determined many, many years ago as a depth to which scavenger animals were unlikely to dig up a body. Caskets and vaults were not used way back then, so this was an important consideration.
Nowadays, the containers used prevent animals from smelling the deceased or digging to it, so graves are generally 4 feet deep or so, if it's a single burial. If it's to be a...

A cemetery perpetual care fund, usually a trust, is a fund into which is placed a portion of the plot purchase price. You file for divorce where you live. California will recognize your marriage, provided you have a certificate or some other documentation. Without documentation, you have a "common law" marriage, which is not recognized in all states. See a lawyer.

Answer to:
I apologize in advance if this question is offensive to anyone. It's comforting to go to the cemetery to pay your respects...where does one go to pay one's respects when a loved one has been cremated?
Many cremains are buried in a cemetery with a monument or marker marking the spot. Many others are placed in a niche in a columbarium (a mausoleum for urns).
Others scatter the cremains, so a visit to the scattering location would be a focal point for paying respects.

Plenty of people are in debt due to circumstances that aren't "shady" and are trying to get a job in order to pay their debts and repair their credit scores. Doesn't requiring good credit to get a job just perpetuate the problem?
A bad credit report can be a red flag that this person may be tempted to steal from the company to make ends meet. Also, if the person owes more than he/she can pay, creditors may start garnishment proceedings, which most employers hate.
This is a major reason people should avoid overextending themselves financially.

You aren't likely to get the answers you want, even if he has ended the affair. Decide whether you would be better off without him, and act accordingly. Many women have forgiven their wayward husbands if they are contrite and open about the state of things. If he won't talk by now, there's not much hope he ever will.

A New Zealand heart surgery patient got another shock when his boss visited him as he recovered and sacked him. The boss thought that the man would not be able to do his work again, so told him that was the reason he was sacking him. What do you think?
Heartless. An employee I supervised had a heart attack, and the president of the company wanted to fire him for the same reason. I fought that for months, and finally told the boss that if the poor guy (who had since returned to work and was ok) was fired, I would leave, too. End of story. The employee worked for years until his retirement. By the way, my state is a "work at will"...

If you are in your home and someone knocked on your door at 9pm, would you: (A) Shoot them through the door. (B) Go to an upstairs window with a gun and tell them to clear off, but be ready to shoot them if they don't. (C) Open the door?
Why not just yell through the door and ask who it is...what they want? Have your weapon in hand should the person attempt to crash through the door. Be sure they have crashed through into the house before you shoot them.
If you shoot through the door or from the upstairs window, you will be in big trouble.

Is it legal for an officer in NC sit on private property and radar passing traffic without written permission from the land owner?
The questioner did not say the officer was in the driveway, only that he was on private property. He could have been on a parking lot or in a field, not blocking a driveway at all. A police officer can go wherever he needs to in order to enforce the law. Most property owners would not object to a police officer working radar from their private property.

Letters are usually earned, mostly in athletic achievements. However, this will vary among schools. High school practices are often different than college practices.

Of course, one can buy the letters and sew them to sweaters, jackets, etc. Wearing an unauthorized letter, though, could be problematic.

No, there's no reason for that. There is plenty of unused land (at least in the US), so there's not a shortage of land. Cremation should be a personal preference; many people are opposed to cremation for themselves and should not be forced into something they don't want, when there's no compelling reason.

Yes, there should be a service of some kind. Most families do. Others have a direct (immediate) cremation and hold a memorial service and/or visitation later.

Is a salaried employee required to work as many hours as the employer wants without being compensated?
In some cases, the employer can pay "Chinese overtime", which can be a half-time for each hour over 40 in a week, instead of the time-and-a-half paid hourly workers. This can also be figured by dividing the basic salary amount by the total number of hours worked that week; as long as the result equals or exceeds the minimum wage, it is legal.

No, you do not get back to "normal" if what you mean by "normal" is being able to stop the medication. You will most likely be taking medication for this condition for the rest of your life. However, you may need to be re-evaluated by your doctor, or even by another doctor, so that your medication can be adjusted if necessary to provide optimum results.

There is certainly room for God in science. After all, God created all that scientists investigate.

Any thoughts on the Scout Movement?
I enjoyed my years as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout. There were some bad spots, like being fondled by a sicko assistant scoutmaster, but I found most of the guys, both scouts and leaders, to be helpful and enjoyable to be around. We had some great times. I learned a lot about life and about myself through Scouting.

Is there some kind of matrix to help you tell if you have enough for retirement
Figure that you might live thirty years after retiring. If "living" costs you "X" number of dollars per year, double that amount and multiply by 30. That's the amount you should have when you retire.
Otherwise, figure on working at least part time and also seriously cutting back on your lifestyle: smaller house, little travel, etc.

I've heard that adult children can not have a parent in their insurance policy. Basically, I would like to have my mom covered by my insurance. Is this universally not allowed, or does it depend on the insurance company?
I assume you're talking about individual or family medical insurance (not your employer's group insurance). Check around for one or more companies that will allow you to do that. Most likely, you will need to take out a separate policy to cover your mother. In any event, it's not going to be inexpensive.

I am looking for a bank that will give me a home equity loan that does not have to have interest and principle paid back for ten years. My wife and I are octogenerians, own our own 1 million dollar condo, and are looking for funds to arrange HOMECARE.
Look for a reverse mortgage instead of a home equity loan. A reverse mortgage is designed for people like you. With it, you are paid a set sum each month The terms can be arranged so that the payments continue after one of you dies. When the other dies, the condo becomes the property of the bank.

My wife got a 1099-misc for $1500 for a one time event last year. Tax software says we don't need to fill in schedule SE. It is a joint return, and I maxed out on the SS/Med taxes. Since the income is hers, I'm skeptical that she doesn't owe ss/med.
On a joint return, the incomes of both are combined and it's the total that is considered. In my case, my wife, if she were filing separately, would owe no income tax on her Social Security income; however, we file jointly and my business income is enough to trigger income tax on our combined Social Security income. So, since you've already paid the max, she owes no more. I think. :)

Pulling over to the SIDE of the road is important here. Some idiots just stop right in the middle of the traffic lane out of some misguided sense that placing yourself in a dangerous position of perhaps getting yourself and others killed shows respect for the dead.

Please clarify overpayment applied. Son filed jointly with spouse
and she recieved a notice from IRS stating overpayment applied to
to balance due, from her previous return the notice gave the amount
applied then showed balance as zero on her tax debt
Apparently they were due a refund (amount of taxes overpaid), so the IRS applied that amount from the refund to pay off the debt she owed on a previous tax return. So, now she owes no back taxes from that return.

Younger folks these days don't seem to relate to such terms.
Answer to:
What do abortion clinics do with the dead babies?
Abortion clinics are not hospitals. One would hope that they disposed of the abortion product in medical waste, which is eventually incinerated.
At hospitals with whose procedure I am familiar, there is no contract with a crematorium. Instead, the babies, including stillbirths, are accumulated on a tray in the morgue cooler until there are enough to shovel into the hospital incinerator.

With a condo, you have no land. You own only the part of the building you occupy, so the parking lot and part of the golf course are not your land.

There is such a thing. A friend of mine worked for the company before he died.I think it only works in communities with lawyers who subscribe to it.

How is the embalming process done?
Simply put, modern embalming uses the body's circulatory system to saturate most of the soft tissues of the body with a preservative solution which is injected into one or more arteries, with most of the blood in the system being drained from one or more veins at the same time. Areas not reached by the injected solution are treated separately. Hanging the body up for gravity draining is...

I am wondering if when I die can i have my baby that died in 1991 exhumed and put in my arms and the two of us be buried together in the same casket
In most jurisdictions, no court order is necessary for the next-of-kin to have the casket exhumed and reburied in the same grave with you.
However, the local health department must issue a permit and a funeral director must oversee the transfer.

Answer to:
Why isn't President Ford's casket open so the public can view him. For that matter, no former President had an open casket. Why not?
The ultimate reason lies with the family's choice. I suspect that most presidential families keep the casket closed so that the line of people passing by the casket in its public repose will keep moving at a faster pace than if the body were visible. This is in keeping with official protocol, but the family could override that, if they so chose.
Usually, the family, and perhaps others...

Have you ever heard of a corporation putting a "freeze" on all hiring? My husband has been working as a contract employee for a bg corp.that has been saying for 8 mnths that they're going to hire him and now they say there's a cmpnywide freeze new hires.
Hiring freezes are common in companies of all sizes. Many companies use independent contract workers in order to avoid paying benefits a regular employee might receive. So, using contract workers is less costly than hiring them as "permanent" employees. Count your husband lucky to have the work.

What do you think about the "rapture"? Is there such a thing? The word "rapture" isn't in the bible anywhere that I can find. In 2Thessalonians 1:6-12 it speaks of the retribution, but never rapture.

Usually the embalmer must cauterize the tissue left inside the eye socket to prevent leakage. Then a plastic eyecap is positioned to give the closed eyelids a normal shape, so that the removal of the eyeball is not noticeable.
Other organs are removed through incisions in places not usually visible after the body has been dressed.

The only right you have is to continue payments until you have fully paid for the car and receive clear title to it.

Unless there is a will providing differently, the fiancee has no claim on the car or anything else belonging to the decedent.

He probably can't afford another household for himself as well as maintaining the old house for you. So this is a compromise he sees as necessary. Selling the house and splitting what proceeds there might be after paying off the mortgage might leave each of you with barely enough to make a deposit on two apartments.

What do you mean by "there's no probate"? Most states require probate if a will exists. If there is no will, and there is real estate, the only way you are going to sell that house is through probate. You go to probate court and apply to be appointed administrator of the estate. Then you sell the house and pay off the credit card company. After paying probate fees, and maybe a...

I was terminated after 21 years of service with a company. What is a previous employer allowed by law to disclose to a future employer checking references?
Legally, in many jurisdictions, the employer can disclose any fact asked for by a prospective employer. However, most employers are reluctant to disclose negative facts out of fear of lawsuits or even physical harm. Your old employer can shoot you down without disclosing particulars if the inquiring employer asks "Would you rehire this person?" That's a question often asked when...

It can vary, depending upon what category of worker you happen to be and what laws govern such matters where you live. In the USA, the most common way of calculating overtime is on an hourly basis. With most medical schools, the family can request the return of the remains for burial in the family's cemetery plot.

During a funeral for a retired veteran I was given the folded flag and the 21 shells and told to put the shells into the flag. What is the meaning behind this?
When I served as member of an honor guard in the fifties, the shell casings were never placed inside the flag nor given to the NOK.
Somehow the practice of placing shell casings, sometimes many more than 3, in the folded flag or in the hands of the NOK came into being with non-active-duty honor guards. However, the casings used are NOT the ones just fired, because those would not only be hot,...

Does the embalming fluid change color of the deceased?
The embalming fluids used in funeral homes to prepare bodies for viewing contain coloring agents to impart a (hopefully) natural color to the skin. In life, the blood in the capillaries gives color to the skin, even in dark-skinned persons. The embalming fluid replaces the blood, so a coloring agent is helpful in maintaining appropriate coloring to the skin. The embalmer can add additional...

Funerals in some religious groups last longer than others. Some churches have a prescribed liturgy for funerals that may take up to an hour. At an open-casket funeral, a crucifix was removed from the casket by a family member as a keepsake, and now there is disagreement over who should keep it. Should the crucifix have been removed in the first place?
There should have been prior discussion among the family members if this was an act contemplated before its execution. Sometimes such things are done spontaneously, often leading to discord.

There have been disputes among families over who gets the visitors register...

Can we choose to not be buried in a cemetery or be cremated but be burried in our backyard or on any other property we own?
The burial of a body establishes a cemetery, so the location must be approved by the local authorities, usually the zoning board in the US. Some states may have statutes governing burials in places other than established cemeteries.
In most cases, the burial, even on your own property, cannot take place within a municipality and must not contitute a nuisance.

If it is chosen for the ashes of the cremated to be buried in an urn....WHERE do these urns ussually get buried? e.g. are urns buried in gardens of Rememberences??
WHERE do urns get buried?I'm sorry if this is a strange question.
Urns are usually buried in a cemetery. However, most states consider the cremation to be the final disposition of the body and place no restrictions on where the urn can be buried.
Of course, one must be sensible and considerate of the rights and feelings of others by making sure the owner of the property where the urn is to be buried approves.

Some people use the terms interchangeably, but they really describe two distinct types of containers.

Dentures are used, if available and if they fit. Often a person ill for some time before death does not use the dentures and there may be enough weight loss to shrink the tissues around the mouth. In such cases, it is common for the dentures to be too large for the mouth and they are not used. However, they are then placed under the pillow in the casket.
