But greatness has to do with reaching one's fullest potential and helping others to do the same. At that, he was a miserable failure in leadership.

I'm 26 and STILL come across people my age and older who are like this. Is it in their nature to be mean? Sometimes you just have to decide to hang around more positive people. Those that are positive tend to be those who do not do that. There are exceptions.
