    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

On One Hand: Zoloft Prescribed for Diabetic Neuropathy

Zoloft, or sertraline, was prescribed in a study performed by the University of Miami School of Medicine and released in Psychosomatic Medicine. The results of the study reported that at a maximum dosage of 150 milligrams per day, it was effective in treating diabetic neuropathy. Since Zoloft is classified as an anti-depressant, it can also help with depression resulting from chronic pain.

On the Other: Considered an Off-Label Drug Use

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved Zoloft for diabetic neuropathy. When clinical studies are successful, doctors can prescribe the medication to treat other conditions, known as an off-label use. The study from University of Miami also mentioned that more research needs to be performed in reference to using Zoloft for diabetic neuropathy.

    Bottom Line

Diabetic neuropathy is a condition that causes chronic pain. Medications can be prescribed to help treat the conditions associated with diabetic neuropathy, but the best cure is properly managing diabetes.

Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) which aids in correcting the serotonin imbalance in the brain. Zoloft is normally prescribed for depression, fear disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can have sexual side effects and the other alternative medicine is best prescribed by a physician. Get an expert opinion and find a better cure than oral medication. Consult physicians at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, known for paralysis treatment and other advanced treatments.
