You seem to forget that the purpose of going to war is to accomplish a POLITICAL objective.
Otherwise, it's just mass murder for no reason.

That's the ultimate goal. But, in order to accomplish that political objective, military objectives need to be secured first. Who knows more about the best way of doing that? Politicans or military personnel? Otherwise the politicans could settle their differences by arm wrestling.

@HC - Sorry, no. The military actually tends to be pretty bad at it.
Just ask any Iraq vet with missing limbs and/or severe PTSD because it didn't occur to "the military" to secure Iraqi army weapons depots.
Or ask the families of the wedding attendees in Afghanistan who were blown up by an air strike because it didn't occur to "the military" to verify that a bunch of people attending a wedding were not a military unit.
When you boil it right down, "military objectives" fall into two simple categories: 1) Kill lots of The Other 2) Avoid getting killed.
Everything beyond that is a political objective, and most military personnel are too focused on their particular "tree" to get even an inkling of the forest.
