    Asker's Pick

Selected by the asker, Michael. (What's this?)

With gun crime on the rise in the UK, the knee-jerk reaction is to impose stricter gun laws, but you need to look at the bigger picture here. The UK has enjoyed relatively low homicide and gun crime rates, but these numbers were low even before the imposition of many of the current gun control laws, which indicates that the gun control laws are not the source of the low crime rates. Maybe the people in the UK are simply nicer... perhaps they're raised with a temperament that steers them generally away from confrontation... I'm not sure anyone really knows for sure. One thing I do know, however, is that with escalating gun violence, the one thing that won't save you is disarming law-abiding citizens who may be potential targets for gun-toting thugs. Taking away a person's ability to defend their self is tantamount to taking away their right to defend their self... and everyone should have that right.

If this poll had only been answered by citizens of the country mentioned (the UK) the vote would have been an overwhelming "No". The picture has been skewed by people from a different culture applying their life experience to a culture they don't know.

That's for the citizens of the United Kingdom to decide.

I'm an American and most of us still support the Second Amendment of our Constitution that insures our right to own firearms. And it becomes more apparent every day that we need to continue that right of self-protection.

The US has more child death from gun accidents than the UK has total gun deaths (in proportion to the population). Their right to self defence is bought with their children's lives. I don't want that here.

I see guns as symptomatic of a violent culture. It is a two way relationship - violent people want guns, but guns make people violent. I do not want to be part of a gun-toting culture.

No thank you. We have enough already on the streets illegal by the way. The sensible people in UK don not have a need for one. I would not want to be in possession of a gun should I lose my rag.

I'm not a UK citizen, so I don't feel I should have a right to either impose, or presume to apply, my personal beliefs about firearms and firearm ownership on them. They have their own government of duly elected officials to represent them and their desires, whatever those may be.

They have a system in place which seems to suit them quite well. I rather imagine that if enough of them didn't agree with it, changes would be made to counter their existing rules and laws on the matter to reflect that.

They have some citizens who do not agree with their laws as they stand now, and some who are quite content with them.

Overall, it seems to me that the people I've encountered and read about in the subject seem to indicate that the majority of the UK population is happy with their gun laws as they exist now.

So what I think on the matter either way is a moot point.

I hope I never live to see the day guns are legalised in the UK. Luckily enough, the people won't be stupid enough to let that happen...

The majority of people who picked yes are either Americans or live there... If guns were allowed in the UK, we'd have protection but those who commit crimes would have a MUCH easier access to guns. It would most likely make crimes increase than decrease.

So long as they are trained and educated in the proper handling of personal firearms and the responsibilities that go along with lawful ownership.

Because of differences in reporting and data collection methods, comparisons of total crimes are difficult to compare. Many of those crimes will be things like motoring offences, where a single incident may produce different numbers of crimes in diffent countries. Or petty theft, whereas crackdowns and zero tolerance policies can produce huge numbers of crimes.

I'd love one and I'd love to go hunting. I've used rifles before and I loved it. To bad there are so many idiots out there that would use it for harm. At least I live in the EU where I can just move somewhere else if I want a change of culture :)

Well, the crime rate in Britian is actaully higher than here in the US and the gun crime rate has doubled in the last 10 years.
Personally, I think people should be able to defend themselves by whatever means necessary, and a gun usually does the trick. I think the UK has some screwy laws in regards to self-defense.

From a judge in a case where the family was tied up by burglars "...whatever the circumstances, persons cannot take the law into their own hands."

The case of Anthony Edward "Tony" Martin is a prime example.

Any person in the "world" who wants to protect them selves should have the right. If that person desires a firearm for this it should be allowed.
As long as the person is protecting life and home, it should be allowed. I am glad I do not live there, I enjoy shooting. As a retired police officer I have seen times when a person would not have been violated if armed.
I remember a young lady who lived in an apartment alone. Ask dad for a gun and he said no. You will not take care of the gun. Man forced him self in her apartment and raped her. His friends were called and several goons took turns on her. Not only was she damaged in many ways, she will never recover. STD and mental stress destroyed her.

depends if they keep it in a safe place away from other people and children.also there very strict you have to keep it in a British standard gun safe and if your in the middle of being robbed i don't really think there's time to get it out.
