SL00124, Lds 'Headquarters Culture' And The Rest Of Mormonism: Past And Present

The Mormon doctrine of "Gathering" created a distinctive culture at the headquarters of the LDS church. During founder Joseph Smith's life, this "headquarters culture" had pronounced differences of theology, Church practice, and culture from the experience of Mormons who lived distant from the headquarters. This had profound consequences following Joseph's 1844 martyrdom. This paper examines the significance and changes of LDS headquarters culture in Smith's lifetime, in pioneer Utah Mormonism, and in 20th-century Mormonism. I also suggest possible directions for the headquarters culture in the 21st century. In addition to emphasizing the distant past, this presentation invites the audience to participate in walking down "Memory Lane" by sharing their own experiences with this dynamic.

    Does it matter?

"true modern mormon culture" is a false dichotomy. culture is dependent upon ones origin and geography. i dont see how one can define one form of mormon culture as true and one as not true. while i will admit that utah mormon culture and mormon culture in other parts of the US and the world are distinct the doctrine is remarkably the same.

Are you asking if the doctrine is true, or the culture? Because if you mean culture, then the question doesn't make any sense to me. How can a culture be true or not? Unless the question implies that the differences in culture create differences in doctrine.

The cultural Mormon is a bane whether he lives in Utah or not. The cultural Mormon will just go by what he thinks he knows or what he heard someone say instead of by the scriptures and the testimony of the Holy Spirit. He operates in worldly ways instead of seeking out instruction directly from the Lord. Cultural Mormons love to quote from apostles of the church and general authorities (often out of context) and ignore what the scriptures say. Cultural Mormons might indeed admit that Jesus Christ is Jehovah, but then they'll turn right around and insist that he's not the Almighty God. That's like saying the sky is blue but it isn't blue. Who could be that ignorant?

Look, God himself is our Savior. The Lord of Hosts descended from his throne on high and gave his life that we might live. He himself paid the price of our redemption: "For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke." (Isa.59:17)

To relegate Jesus Christ to some other position than the LORD is to deny the entire gospel message. You cannot be a Mormon if you do not know that the Lord our God, Jesus Christ, is above all things, and that he, himself, is our Eternal God.

Are there a lot of Mormons running around spouting "Mormon" doctrine and instead proving that they couldn't possibly qualify as Christ's people because they deny that he's the Great I AM? Yes. And this, after everything the church has done to emphasize that Jesus Christ is Jehovah.

I don't think there is one true modern Mormon culture. Doctrine, not culture, dictates if it's true or not.

I'm sure you've heard that Mormons outside of Utah make fun of the Utah Mormon culture. At the same time, there is very little culture shared by Mormons world-wide (except perhaps the love of food). I visited a small ward in Southern Utah where a certain brother was known to sing a different hymn each month as a means to share his testimony. While this would seem out of place elsewhere, in that ward it was kosher. Utah Mormons have a tendency to be involved in home-based businesses (Amway, Two By Two, Tahitian Noni, etc), and expect ward members to join their down-chain. Utah Mormons also tend to have a wider vocabulary of almost swear words. Many Utah Mormons I know (but not all) equate poverty with punishment from God.

I've lived in Hawaii, Brazil, and Utah and can appreciate each locale's unique Mormon culture.
