Truth is absolute. The impact that a particular truth will have is relative to the individual and to that individual’s relationship to that truth. Liberation, or freedom, is also a relative concept.

    For Instance:

    Truth; You have cancer.

If you were Genghis Khan and were told you had cancer, this is not very liberating news.

If you were Emperor Xuanzong, of the Jin Dynasty, and were told Genghis Khan had cancer, this is pretty good news.

As for being "set free", that would depend on a personal evaluation of one's state of being before and after the truth is revealed.

"The truth will set you free" is a gross oversimplification of myriad complex possibilities. It will likely apply most often when the "truth" is of a positive nature, or somehow benefits the hearer of the truth directly.

Sure. The hard-hearted will get furious at the truth rather than accept it. But the humble in heart know the voice of their Good Shepherd and follow him.
