I assume you're thinking of a tax refund. By "getting" a tax refund, you have just completed an interest free loan to the gov't - congratulations. Your goal should be to have a zero refund.
As a business owner, I pay quarterly tax estimates. I physically write a check to the gov't four times a year. If everyone paid their taxes this way, there would be a revolt. Employer withholding is a relatively painfree way for you to pay your taxes, and somehow over the years, people have been trained to be HAPPY about a tax refund. What a joke!
Taxes are an expense. It would be more plain for people to see if they actually cut a check to pay them.

    voted: months rent paid

I thought of this months tax return as 3 months rent with some pocket change (as in other bills untouched if covering 3 months rent) however it is only going to pay for one month giving myself a month and a half to get a summer job between semesters before I am in trouble.

actually, the greatest thing about having a nice tax return is not anything I might buy with that money, but that I will be able to live for the next 4 months without looking at my bank account. money doesn't have to buy happiness... having enough to not worry about it is happiness in and of itself.
