So When you believe in spanking a child? What about the consequences later in the child's life? Does anyone realize the damage this causes?

    I don't think spankings will ruin a child's life. Not all spankings are "beatings" .. they can just be a swat with a hand - mostly temporarily just hurt the child's pride more than anything else.

    We occasionally spanked our son when he little, but when we were more able to reason with him, there was no need for spankings. We would tell him what he did "wrong" and send him to his room or have him take a brief time out. That usually worked very well.

    I think the main thing for parents is to be consistent with discipline -- whatever you choose to use. Kids not only need love .. but rules and boundaries.

    Not always true. There are many things that can go wrong in spanking even if you think that just swatting them on the butt is ok, well its not. It teaches them bad behavior and we learn it from our parent #1 suppliers of the intel children learn is from their mother and father. So whether you swat their behind because you think its justifiable or not. Spanking is still not ok. It's like other big decisions we make that influence the child's life. It >>can

    Young children are not amenable to reason, and gentle physical correction does NOT leave the child traumatised in later life. It is necessary and in the long term more humane than allowing them to grow up believing that they have the right to please themselves how they behave. It also makes for a sounder society.
