All the time. It's the fastest and easiest way to check out.

    Nope.

The lineups are long at the cashiers because the store wants them to be long at the cashiers, so they can get more people to use the self checkout as habit and eventually get rid of the cashiers.

If you don't like all the jobs being lost this way, then you can't use the self-checkout, even if it means waiting longer.

If the store gets stupid and limits the cashiers to just one or two when the lines are huge, then just leave your items right there and walk to and go to another store that doesn't do this. By doing this, the manager will see that they've lost sales because of their decision, and also haven't saved labor costs (as someone needs to put your items back on the shelf.)

All these things are customer driven. If you want change, you have to make conscious decisions to encourage it. Or you could go protest like an idiot.

I tried one once and it tried to charge me twice for the same item. Stuff that, I'd rather be served by a human being with a brain.

No. Everytime I have tried one I it had problems and I had to wait for a manager to come over. And it had to be a manager, because the unbusy checkout girl at the next counter couldn't have the codes to check me out on the self-checkout stand.

If I have one or two items, and there are long lines. I really try not to because I feel they are putting a cashier out of a job and I don't want to do that. Also, I feel they are just too impersonal, I like the interaction of a human being.

Yes, when I have some items that I don't want the cashier noticing (tampons, if the cashier I was about to go to is male)... or if I just buy something completely random.
