• well i know 2 business owners who raised their prices when ever they felt like and often got away with charging twice market value
  heck, one was selling phone unlocking service 50.00 and getting the unlock code for free from his friend inside a major cellular service or for a couple dollars on ebay if a different carrier
  
  while similar businesses were charging 20.00 to 25.00 for the same service.

  Answer this, did Bill Gates raise prices for his software when taxes went up? Of course not, as soon as MS introduces new software, the price starts falling. That is the market, that is where actual business people operate. No where in the market are price increases allowed to happen unchallenged. the market works to equalize value for each product...simple econ 101. New ideas, services, delivery methods increase value...which is the only way to sustain a higher price.

• yes, that's the party line in econ 101 but this is the real world where companies have to make MORE profit then the year before or they consider it same as a lose
  a world where employees are used and abused to produce maximum profit for minimum expenditure no matter the cost
  and yes, a world where business owners raise their prices to maintain and increase their profits when they have to spend more money
  look at McDonald which raised the price of their dollar menu item the double cheese burger and replaced it with the mcdouble (a smaller sandwich with less meat)
  look at gas stations who maintained higher prices even when the market price was lowered where ever they could get away with it.
  look at the many who have money stashed in foreign banks to avoid paying taxes on that money
  
  by the book doesn't apply when no one is right there enforcing the rules

• You forgot to mention that food costs have risen, causing MC D's to change their pricing structure and/or quantity offered. You also forgot to mention competition, price gouging (which is what you are talking about) is only temporary, if the market is allowed to shift supply.
  You really sound like you think large companies are some kind of evil entity, out to suck every last dime from you. I'm not a fan of Wal Mart, or Exxon, or other giant companies, but we live in a free market (relatively) system, in which large companies are allowed to operate, just like small companies are. Perhaps somewhere in the world, employees are "used and abused", but in the US, the workforce is generally very well treated, too well in some cases.

  If you have seen the medical software available today for reading MRI and CAT scans lately, you should be very grateful for Microsoft and other large evil companies that develop the technology.

• Not sure what scripture has to do with the tangible benefits that microsoft has supplied to you and me.
  Recognition that large companies provide benefits to our society isn't rocket science...nor does it mean one endorses the company or their values. Because Bill Gates is a large donor of money, does not mean I admire him. I think the charities he chose are not worthwhile. Not my money, not my choice. By there is no doubt about the value he brought to information technology.
  There are also thousands of small companies that bring value to the society. Many are no less "evil" than the large companies.

  and your missing my point here, which is, rules and laws only apply if you get caught (ask jim and tammy faye baker)
  almost everyone cheats on their taxes, almost everyone exploits someone else
  do you really believe the rich got rich by following the rules and being kind to their fellow man?
  a perfect example of what honesty and kindness gets you is colonel sanders and the KFC ripoff (look it up)
  same reason i don't trust any president (you have to be one of the sneakiest lying snakes in the garden just to make it to nomination)

  Your three quates above are may be true for some, but I can't control what others do. I focus on me and my family and business. You would do well to do the same.
  
  I do not in any way cheat on my taxes. High risk, small return in my opinion...plus I sleep much better at night.
  
  We did get rich, and precisely by following rules and being kind. That is our business. If we don't follow insurance/gov't rules in the medical field, we'd be out of business. Without kindness shown to our employees and patients, we'd have neither group of poeple.
  
  And for the umpteenth time, we are told by insurance/gov't what we can charge. There is no way possible to pass on our higher taxes to our customer.
  
  Your blanket statements are insulting to anyone who does things the right way. Why don't you start doing things the right way, perhaps you would stop projecting evil on anyone around you that is successful.

• Of course. Corporate and upper-class taxes are paid by regular consumers. They are just seen as input costs and passed along. Competition doesn't factor in because the tax is levied on the entire sector, therefore they can all raise their prices and know they won't be getting undercut.
