Restylane is a brand name for a transparent form of hyaluronic acid. It's approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for injection into the facial tissues for the purpose of smoothing out folds and wrinkles. Studies conducted by the manufacturer show that Restylane is safe and that the effects last for about 6 months. Redness and swelling at the injection are the most common side effects of Restylane. Additional side effects include bruising, itching, pain and tenderness. Restylane shouldn't be used in patients who have severe allergies, and it shouldn't be used for breast augmentation. Restylane is generally considered safe and effective for the treatment of nasolabial wrinkles, although the effects are not permanent. The side effects are usually mild and temporary except in the rare patient who is allergic to it. A second injection is required in one-third of cases to achieve a satisfactory result. On One Hand: Recognized Benefits
