I say yes as long as the zoo is humane and gives the animals lots of space to roam around in. Also, how else will people get educated about wild animals and how else can we possibly preserve the species? Most zoos are humane and those that aren't should be closed down and the owners should be put in jail.

Being kept in captivity is an unnatural state for a wild animal. If they are kept in captivity they should not be kept in tiny cages. They should be kept in large enclosures where they can have some space between them and the visitors. I'm sure it is stressful for wild animals to have people so close-up, shouting and poking at them all day.

The main reason we need zoos is because we are destroying the natural habitats these animals need to survive. Game reserves that preserve habitat and the wildlife that call those habitats home are the only solution. BOTH on land AND in the sea. Marine Reserves, Wildlife Reserves, National Parks. Not animal amusement parks.

The first thought that entered my mind after reading the arguments was, "PETA? That was the best they could do?" Apparently this sham of a non-profit organization took time off from killing animals and funding arsonists to insult our intelligence by suggesting that there is no educational value to be gained from visiting zoos, and we should be expecting a Treatise on Feline Freedoms just as soon as tigers learn to write (because they obviously have a well-developed concept of privacy and personal liberties, and furthermore feel that they are being violated. Ingrid Newkirk knows this because she communicates with them via grrs and roars).

While some zoos should not be in business because they have too little space for too many animals, allow over-crowding, have inadequate shelters, etc, the ones that I have experienced have only deepened my empathy for other creatures. I've been to Park Safari and the Biodome, both in Montreal. Both were fun and educational, both met the qualifications of a good environment for animals. When you see an animal on television or in a picture, it's just that - an image. In my opinion, seeing it in real life and hearing about the problems its habitat faces creates more sympathy and a greater willingness to help.

Zoos are not prisons. Especially modern ones. And animals are more interested in territory and security than some obscure human ideal like 'freedom'. Also, zoos perform an important function in that they provide the planet's most deadly predator with firsthand reasons why we shouldn't destroy the natural world.

I went to the zoo, all I saw was a bunch of moving corpses who have no reason to live other than eating. What really is the point? Some say it teaches kids about the wild animals. Now I wonder what does watching lions laying on the ground in a cage have to teach a kid?

I think the only animals that should be kept in zoos are critically endangered animals that are part of breeding programs to a) keep the species in existence and b) to increase the numbers for possible release into the wild one day.

And when I say zoos, I mean REAL zoos. I don't mean the kinds that let people swim with dolphins and pet tigers. I mean the kinds that are more concerned about conservation than exploiting the animals.

For me, learning about animals in childhood by seeing them in zoos gave me an appreciation for the importance of trying to preserve them in their natural habitats. The zoo animals are like "ambassadors" for their brethren in the wild. Most zoos do not capture animals from the wild anymore. According to Jack Hanna at the Columbus Zoo, 98-99% of their animals come from other zoos, to promote healthy diversity in breeding. Regulations require zoos to maintain certain standards of care and comfort for their animals. think it is much better for people to learn about them and develop an appreciation for many diverse species by seeing them up close and personal in a zoo rather than just on television or in a picture book. Let's advocate for clean zoos which provide a safe environment for animals and for the people who come to view them and learn about them. Ultimately, this will increase people's appreciation and understanding, and more people will be willing to participate in saving wildlife sanctuaries and habitats.

Yeah, PETA is SUCH a reliable source of info... from their history of kidnapping peoples dogs and killing them, to actually even destruct private property illegally.

First off, I'm for zoos. They're educational, most of them are clean, and educational. I've been to some really nice zoos that were free, clean, educational, and huge.
People need to realize that animals don't look at cages like humans do, we look at them as jails, but look at dogs.. they find it as their secure place in the "home", that it is THEIR spot within the household that they own, and they feel comfort from that.
Sure, a tiger is different from a dog, but if a tiger was trapped in an insanely small space, you don't think other people would be rising up the issue themselves?

The idea of humans capturing animals to put in display cases for us to just walk past and gawk at is depressing and perverse to me. I know we have our concerns about protecting wild life but there would be no concerns if we weren't totally impeding on it to begin with.

Even though I love seeing the animals up close, I really believe that there are so many of them that just would be so much happier with their freedom. I guess it depends on the zoo. We used to have a small town zoo in our area that had bears in tiny cages and coyotes that would pace back and forth. Monkeys in narrow cages that threw their scat at passersby for amusement. Tigers that got no exercise. Seeing neurotic animals is not educational and doesn't help anything. I'd rather have them free, even with the dangers. There are some animals who seem to handle captivity better than others. I guess with the great nature shows we have now, we don't need zoos like we used to.

I actually don't cherry. Unless you have a humongous "zoo" which is their natural habitat. I don't like to see animals caged up to be used as entertainment for human beings. Just as I don't like to cut flowers to put in a vase and have them die sooner than they would if left alone to live out their lives. I don't like furs either. Humans do some very unkind things to other species just to adorn their bodies or be entertained and I'm not really okay with any of it. :(

i m strictly against keeping animals in zoos. they also have a life. they also deserve freedom. then who r v to be a hurdle in their path. some people think that keeping them in zoo is the only way to boost their population but no there are a number of natural reserves that can help for the same.......... n the people who agree to keep animals in cage should think that how did they feel when they will be kept in a jail. thats quite similar right ;-))

YES!! I love animals and was a vegetarian for six good months bacause I just love and respect them. I know it's ironic but would'nt it be great if these animals are monitored and well-kept. For example, have you guys been to the Singapore Zoo? It's a fantastic place. Animals are'nt caged and they have abundant necessities.

The thing is, animals need protection but at the same time, freedom. It's like nature reserve. All animals should be protected and taken well-off. The higher authorities should really invest on this issue to make spaces for them. Animals are as important as we are. It's just that they are not as capable as we think they are.

I think that freedom is the basic right of every animal and we should not captivate animals in zoos just for our entertainment but I think that Safari Park is a good alternative to zoo as animals live under natural environment over there or those zoos are also good which have reasonable place for animals.

yes definitely they should be kept in zoos... since we moved out of forest to homes with all facilities, why should the animal alone suffer for food in forest. If they are in zoo, they will have doctors to take care of, then timely food.. man.. life will be happy... :)

...but only if the animals are treated humanely and have large enclosures that effectively replicate their habitat and home range. Zoos are important for public education, but if the animals are treated with cruelty, they do more harm than good.

However unpleasant it may be to have animals in cages, I think the purpose of conserving and protecting endangered species from predators and habitat loss can be more important than the subjective "emotionality" we assign to animals. What do we as humans know what it's like to be a bat? Nothing, because we're not bats, and I bet even bats can appreciate having food, shelter, and protection from harm and the elements.

I would love to say no animals should not be kept in zoos, they should be able to roam free in their own lands, but as we know there are horrible people out there poachers , and people who think it is great to hunt and kill. so if it wasnt for zoos, and animal parks, a lot of animals that would have been wiped out, are still thriving and breeding . Unfortunatly some zoos around the world are not good on animal welfare and these should be shut down.

It's because of zoos that the animals that are extinct in the wild still exist. With zoos we can multiply the number of animals better that the animals can in the wild. Yes some zoos are filthy but that doesn't mean every zoo is.

I'm all for it so long as they take good care of the animals, ensure that they have plenty of room to run around in their enclosure, and live in the kind of environment that their particular breed has adapted to.

Am I the only one who noticed that people bring up this issue all the time with zoos, but never seem to mention anything about aquariums? Or have I been living under a rock, not noticing that they have already done so?

I would take a bullet for an animal and I say yes. In zoo's everyday people can learn about animals that they would have never seen outside a zoo. Kids love it, it helps people learn, and often the animals are not fit for life in the wild so it keeps them alive.

In Zoos, people have the opportunity to learn about animals in an up-close way. Zoos allow for captive populations and breeding programs for scientists and conservationalists to study and release into the wild. The animals are safe. In the wild, the supply of food is low and the supply of fear is high.

I clicked yes, but this comes with reasoning. I believe if taken care of properly and if they have an large cage or area to roam around in. i think zoos could actually be a good thing. they can help to bread that animal, and provide a safe environment for them. Unfortunately because of humans we have been destroying their habitat and hunting them. The earth is becoming a place that is not so friendly to animals. I love them dearly and never want them going extinct, so unfortunately zoos may be the only way one day.

The argument is commonly made that since animals are "lesser beings" they should be given unequal rights. The argument is also made however, that every single organism is equal under all conditions. Both of these arguments are stupid. We should be able to find a middle ground while also providing our children hands-on education about exotic wildlife and preserving endangered creatures, while still letting them roam free.

I used to think of zoos as animal prisons, but have since learned that many species would now be extinct but for zoo breeding programs. Zoos are becoming a lot more conscious of providing their animals with a habitat wherein they are not so aware of being confined; Western Plains at Dubbo is a good example of this; it is so large that they make bicycles and small cars availble for rent, otherwise you'd never get around the place in a day.
