Very interesting question, Mark! I'm really not sure how to answer though. I think...I would give up something that seems like security but is actually a burden, in order to have freedom. Okay, like, I would give up a life of good-paying job that provides financial security, but what really isn't making me happy, just to finally have that peace and liberty. Make sense?

keep in mind those are not liquid assets. it is not a case of I'll give up X ammount of A in exchange for Y ammoung of B. what is more is often people give up a significant ammount of A to recieve an an unverifyable amount of B. in the debate over NDAA our government decided to deny SUSPECTED terrorists the right to due process on the premise that it would grant us greater security from terrorism... due process and keeping terrorists behind bars are NOT mutually exclusive so the tradeoff was invalid, but they stood by their false dichotomy and burned the 5th and 6th ammendments last december... security is a form of freedom but people often go overboard and forget that LIFE HAPPENS.
I believe in freedom... I believe for every freedom available in an anarchy which the government denies it's people the government must compensate to an equal or greater degree with freedoms not otherwise available. the government takes away your liberty to homestead, they need to compensate by making obtaining shelter easier than would be homesteading.

I can't see how giving up security would give you more freedom. In my opinion, greater security gives you more freedom. Lack of security leads to a restricted existence ie you limit your activities to ensure your safety.

However, if you are talking about fighting totalitarian regimes in order to ensure greater security world-wide then, yes, one would be fighting for a good cause.

I prefer security to freedom because as things are, I have enough freedom.
