prayers and the idea of it were copied from spell casting .. among everything else "christiann" that was copied from pagans .
you would have better luck getting a spell done .. , it's the original system .. and involves alot more than the watered down "slapping your hands together" and asking .
lucky they didn't copy the instructions too .. or it would probably work better , and more would believe .
but they still have no idea where and what the target and source is .. but would gladly give "god " the credit when it works .
that's why they copied it ... just in case .

They work in a way similar to positive affirmations, mantras and meditation. They create a positive, peaceful and healthful mental (incl. emotional) state. Our mental state affects our physical state...for better or for worse ...and vice versa (physical state affects mental state). If you've ever felt physically ill from a shock or depression you'll know what I'm talking about.

    "Jesus meditating!!!" ;-)

    Only the placebo effect works.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo
And it can be quite powerful.
    It can cure and kill.

If I were sick or afraid, praying would bring me comfort, lower my anxiety, calm my mind, bring my blood pressure under control, slow my breathing, giving my body a chance to heal.

Well, I'm a bit inclined towards honesty when answering this question. Usually I smartly say in a sarcastic manner, "No." or something along the lines of "Creationism is horseshit.", but the question of, "Can prayer heal?" is a more uncomfortable topic to discuss.

For starters, prayer is a placebo effect. When one "feels" more comfortable, he/she will be able to cope better under stressfull situations. For creationsits, praying is sort of like a binkie where the baby sucks on it constantly to calm itself down.

Defining prayer as a type of placebo, it technically makes the statement "Prayer can heal," correct. However, prayer does not heal in the ways that creationists would want it to. Instead of clapping your hands together and a bright beam of light from out of no where tears a hole in the ceiling accompanied by singing angels and trumpet sounds to clease a cancer patient of his/her illness, it more or less acts as a comforting tool; an indirect painkiller.

    tl;dr:
Prayer as stated in the beliefs of a creationist does not heal. Prayer as a placebo effect does.

There have been numerous studies conducted where it has been shown that a person's mental state can affect their physical wellbeing. Further studies have shown that when a person believes they will become better if others pray for them, their own physical condition can improve. For references, please see:

    1) The Biology of Belief (Lipton, B., 2008)

    2) The Wisdom of Your Cells: How Your Beliefs Control Your Biology (Lipton, B. audio-tape)

    3) The Intention Experiment (McTaggart, L. 2007)

My personal conclusion is that, if you believe prayer can help supplement an overall medical treatment plan, fine! There is certainly no harm and reported instances of benefit in the good wishes, prayers, and kind intentions of others towards one who is ill, making them more comfortable, less stressed and worried, and more conducive to positive outcomes.

Wow, didn't like my prayer metaphor answer hey?

Why would people that pray get sick if a few words cure them anyway?

Like I said in my previous deleted answer, If the person gets better the prayer is answered, if they don't its Gods will.

If its God's will why pray for it anyway?

I am an Atheist but the power of prayer has a "Placebo Effect" for people. If they believe it will help they will feel better. Wired Magazine did a whole article on the Placebo Effect and how it is making drug testing for pharmacies a living hell because over 1/2 of the time the placebo worked better than the drug. Never underestimate the power of the mind and positive thinking

I am agnostic, so im not biased toward either side. But I believe that prayers cant heal you, (maybe they can boost up your spirits and make you feel better because the thought knowing that your prayer could be answerd is pretty satisfyin) But its the thought that counts, right? So actually, in a sense it could heal you...Maybe not physically. But i wanna be literal here, so I have to say no.

Prayer itself does nothing. The beliefs of the prayer or the prayed for may have somewhat of a placebo effect, but that is even debatable since there has been no study (that I am aware of) that has shown even a placebo effect. Some have shown that those who knew they were being prayed for did worse.

As with any form of meditation, prayer can have beneficial health effects. Unfortunately, some people like to use this as an alternative to medical treatment, instead of something to compliment treatment.

    The simple answer is no.

Often people who are receiving treatment pray as well, and when their health recovers or improves they attribute it to divine intervention ignoring the cycle of medication/treatment they were undergoing at the exact same time.

Willing oneself to get better on the other hand which may essentially be what praying to get better is may have a slight effect but only because it has been shown many times there is a link between mental health and physical health.

Whenever scientific tests are done to see if prayer can actually make one better in a situation where nothing else can, prayer will fail time and time again.

Asking the question "why won't god heal amputees?" is a relevant question, it seems prayer only "works" in situations where the subject could get better through natural causes.

    My real response is "no".
I voted "yes" for one reason only.
Prayer is a form of positive thinking, which is known
to have a beneficial effect upon the believer.

As far as a supreme being smiling down upon a few selected humans to
grant their wishes, that is pure nonsense.
It is alarming to see the number of seemingly intelligent people
believing the myth of any religion.

I noticed something while reading Paeglow's and Carroll's arguments. Paeglow's evidence consists of an anecdote about a man whose name he has not mentioned. In fact, there is no real information given at all, in the event that someone may want to read up on it. Although he repeats that this case is medically documented, it appears that he has not tried to bring any professional attention to this, seeing as there appears to be no articles from him whatsoever concerning this miraculous event (I checked PubMed, JSTOR, Academic OneFile).

Carroll, on the other hand, discusses several studies and lists the authors names, as well as the name of the article he wrote on the subject (the best Paeglow can do is refer to some ambiguous "24-year-old man").

Though the placebo effect seems to have everything to do with the healing of prayer, I voted "no" because I took the question to ask whether the prayer itself had the effect, rather than its natural consequences.

Speaking strictly from a statistical point, prayer is shown to give people a brighter outlook. A brighter outlook gives them hope and releases endorphins into the blood, speeding recovery. Scientific (double-blind) studies, not so much. There's no way to measure the mind's response to something that only works when you believe in what you're doing. If they were well enough, I'd venture to say that volunteering to work with children or poor would have the same effect. It's just the feeling of doing something good that makes a difference.

Yes and there is medical scientific proof of miracles thru prayer at Lourdes, some even regenerating whole parts of the body. At one time there were 5000 doctors from 30 countries envolved in scientific research study of the Lourdes cures. These were from all religious persuasions and some who had none. For more info, look on line under LOURDES France.

Even if the healing doesn't come from "God", there are plenty of examples of people who are healed simply because they THINK they are being healed. A lot of doctors prescribe placebo pills to patients who do get better after taking them. Prayer is no different.

to me its both yes and no.....i think its partly the placebo effect and the movements of energy the the meditation part of prayer never the less though go to the doctor when your sick so you can get help in some way. also on a side note just for a little something added when you take medicines technically your taking part in paganism because medicine is like potions from paganism because it uses herbs and other substances as a way to provoke something to happen

I say yes but I don’t think it’s the prayer itself that’s heals, I think it is the person starts to gain more belief that they will get though whatever is wrong with them which as far as I know helps the healing process, obviously it depends what it is. Also prayer is sort of a ‘nothing lost’ thing as well sometimes, if the person isn’t too religious then they may think well if I pray and get better then good if not the I haven’t lost anything by trying… I hope that makes sense :S

I would like to add that I am not a very religious person but I am happy to accept that people believe different things and that it means a lot to them so I don’t insult or try to disprove their beliefs…

    Well that’s what I think anyway ^_^

I barely see this as worth answering. The idea of prayers having any affect on a person's health was disproven during a study. They took a lot of sick people, and then did a double-blind study involving prayer. They found that there was absolutely NO difference between people who didn't know they were receiving prayers, and people who equally didn't know and weren't. The only difference at all that was observed was with people who KNEW they were receiving prayers. People who were told they were, and weren't, also showed more health improvement. What they found is that prayers only 'work' when the person knows about them, and it's far more likely they're undergoing a psychosomatic reaction to knowing they have support. Why would God let only prayers you know about affect you? Apparently God doesn't listen to anyone unless you're expecting people to pray for you.

So says the Anonymous Witch. If you actually studied instead of just bashing Christianity you sound a lot smarter. Actually lots of pagan rites and rituals did find their way into Christianity - on the catholic side! But when you say that everything from Christianity came from paganism not only are you wrong, but you're only including 25% of us.

OK...I have experienced healing in my life -- mind, body and emotions -- so nothing anyone says could sway my personal beliefs, as I'm sure this will not, for anyone who does not already agree with me. My only comment is this: how can one try to argue a standpoint on the supernatural by using science and other things of the natrual, although, God does use these things to prove Himself everyday, for those that are willing to see it...that's why we call you "blind" Also another thing to consider: Who are you praying to? Jesus is the only one who is capable of healing anyone. "By his stripes, we are healed" (Isa. 53). (It is only through His beating, death on the cross, ressurection from the dead, and ascension into heaven that gives us the right to pray at all, or get results). If you are praying to any other spirit or entity or god, of course you will not have possitive results. All gods are not equal... there is only One. *The* Way, *The* Truth, and *The* Life; Jesus Christ. "They (the saints of God) overcame him (the devil) by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony ('anecdotes')..." (Revelation 12:11)
