    No. Communism didn't work there, so all the communist moved back to the United States, New York to be exact, because the bagels are much better here, and the winters in Florida are much warmer.

    Nether one had anything to do with it. They were just announcing what would come to past.
    It was a matter of what one needed to achieve their objective. Did the USSR achieve their objective, no. Did the US achieve their objective, maybe. And again is it a country, or is it individuals. Look to whom will benefit by what actions that go on. Then you have the answers to the question why a country does what it does. It's not a country, it never has been. Look for the individual or group that will benefit by what actions are going on. Take what is happening today. In that matter what has been going on around the world since 9/11. Why the big expansion in the economy, and then suddenly BOOM, the world economy is in trouble, not just the US, but everywhere. Who is to benefit by what is happening. It's not the countries or its people. Just look.

    CIA analysts knew in the 1960s that it was merely a matter of when, not if, the Soviet Union would collapse.

    They had a near-first-world military perched unsteadily on top of a 3rd-world economy.

    But there were military contracts to be issued (along with kickbacks...er, "campaign contributions" to the politicians who issued them) and elections to be won by demonizing opponents for being "soft on Communism", so the Red Menace was continually exaggerated.
