If PETA/Vegans had their way, what would happen to domestic chickens?

i don't think PETA would object to eating the eggs if they chickens were treated according to the organization's standards.
this is very lucky for the chickens since they could never survive the hyperspeed eggmaking process humans bred into them.
setting them loose is a death sentence by starvation.

as for non egg breeds, if they exist, i don't realy know what can be done.
they don't fit into any ecosystem, and integration is a very slow and complicated process

Maybe some people will want to keep chicken as pets, but there'll be much much less chicken and they might die out.

But that's not at all problematic. A "species" isn't capable of feeling pain or pleasure. It's inviduals that we should be concerned about. Those that exist should have a nice life without suffering, but there's no need to bring some maximum amount of beings into existence. If there was, we'd be doing wrong by using condoms, and that's absurd. After farming will be abolished, and I hope it will be (cultured meat will probably speed up the process), the last few remain chicken should be treated well until they die (or, are killed painlessly). If they still produce some last eggs, I don't see a reason why one shouldn't eat them. But since there's (almost) always suffering involved in using animals for food, it should be an ethical imperative to work towards a vegan world. Also because of environmental issues.

They'd all run free!

I wasn't sure how to answer this. PETA will never have its way. Chickens have been manipulated into lives for which humanity bears responsibility. Progressives who don't think we can eat meat also tend to be all in favor of euthanasia, so I suppose that is also a possibility.

- Domestic chickens don't have the instincts or wits to survive in the wild. And it's not very humane to send them out into the woods where they'd be ripped apart by wild dogs, raccoons or owls, instead of the humane death they endure at farms.

- Sorry, on most farms chickens neither live nor die humanely. I'm far from being vegetarian and do eat meat when kosher meat is available. (Kosher chickens for example cannot be force fed as they are on industrial farms because of potential damage to internal organs.) Not that everyone should eat kosher, but everyone who eats meat should have some idea of what kind of practices they are supporting. Organic and farm-raised chickens are probably also better treated than most.
  
  Chickens did just fine on their own until humans bred them into overweight, living food dispensers. Humanity therefore bears responsibility for their treatment. That means humane living conditions and freedom of movement while they are alive, and swift, reasonably painless ends before preparing them for consumption.
  
  If we ever stop eating them, then we still need to breed them back into their natural form so that they can survive on their own in the wild. We've made them our responsibility and we cannot walk away.

- Sorry, but that's not true at all. For every one factory farm with questionable practices, there are hundreds of family farms with a couple chickens out back. Visit any family farm in New Hampshire and tell me that the chickens are not living or dying humanely. It's easy to make assertions about things you've never personally witnessed, isn't it? I've not only raised my own chickens (and they were certainly well cared for), but I've also seen the results when one gets out and lost. I've seen carcases of chickens ripped apart by raccoons and coy-dogs, and it's not a pretty sight.

- I have no problem with the family farms. Unfortunately, much of the chicken available in the market comes from those few factory farms. At the very least, people have a right to know where their food is coming from.
