Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but you have to be guided by your doctors. It very much depends on your chances of survival without the treatments.
They are no picnic, but neither is the alternative.
Radiotherapy causes different symptoms in different people - depending on the severity of the treatment required and where it is focused.
Chemotherapy is also different for different people. There are so many different types of drug combinations that it is impossible to say what side effects you would experience, or any short/long term damage to your body. The specialists are the ones to speak to, they have the information and they will guide you as to what is right for you.
The 'healthier' you are when you start treatments though plays an important part in how well you will manage the treatments, so it is important to build yourself up prior to commencing anything if you have the opportunity.

My dad had both radiation and chemo for prostate cancer. The radiation wasn't too bad but the chemo made him tired all the time.
He survived it and he said no matter what, he'd have taken it. I had him around for a few more years because of it, so to me it was worth it.
All the treatments are getting easier on people these days and better ways are being found all the time.
