What should be the penalty for tax evasion?

Putting people in prison for tax evasion doesn't make any economic sense at all. I mean the government puts people in jail because that person didn't pay them. So their punishment is to live on the government's dime for a set period of time. While in prison this person gets free room and food, actually the government pays them for the work they do. Not only that but they also get free clothes and an education if they so choose.

It all ends up costing the government money. With people like Snipes and Kilmer, it may cost them doubly. Because they are both actors and could make a substantial income if they were not in prison, they miss out on future tax dollars. I mean is prison necessary? Does it solve the problem or just make it worse?

Well some of high government officials also evaded tax and doing ok now, so why should others get any penalty. Max penalty should be to ask for the balance to be paid.

Nothing. Taxes are already a penalty on working and doing something useful.

There's something called the IRS. You should check their website or something.
