    Asker's Pick

Selected by the asker, Halliburton Shill. (What's this?)

Yes, especially from government tyranny. As we speak i am procuring a suitcase bomb from Russia; fine Russian craftsmanship, guaranteed to keep you safe. A remote control detonator is a must though, it might be over kill if your anywhere within 20 miles of the blast.

No. As long as any fanatic can gain access to a nuke there can be no safety.

    Asker's Pick

Selected by the asker, Halliburton Shill. (What's this?)

    No. Absolutely not.

What happens if someone shoots off a nuclear bomb at us? We shoot back, right? Or even if we shoot first (which is absolutely horrible), they shoot back. Either way, we get shot at. Soon, everyone is shooting nuclear bombs off at each other in order for "protection" or "power". Well, here you have everyone killing each other, destroying the atmosphere and shooting radiation into the ground (which kills off plants, leading to sickness and lack of food and radiation poisoning) so basically, everyone dies.

It only takes 1 nuclear bomb. Now, we aren't the only country that has it anymore. Now many countries have it, and it just takes one bomb to start a whole chain of reactions leading to ultimate doom. (Yeah, a bit dramatic, but it's the truth)

A poor choice of weapons for personal protection. How can I use it without killing myself too? It would have to be used as a deterent, which only works if the attacker believes you will use it.

First, I am assuming you are referring to the government having nuclear weapons. In this case the answer is yes. The threat of retaliation will prevent one country from using a nuke on the other.

Ask North Korea, China, India, Pakistan, Israel, and the numerous other countries that have nuclear weapons, that we do not bother!!! Iran, Iraq, and other countries seek this same capabilities so we will not bother them either, not to sell them to terrorists, like we are trained too believe!!! Take a look at what countries we have active military bases; those countries do not have nuclear weapons, and also have our countries drug of need-OIL!!! We desperately want troops in Iran and Iraq, because of the vastness of their oil reserves!! Nigeria is next, but China is beating us too the punch, because they have no problem paying fair market value, provide jobs, good jobs for the Nigeria people, whereas we would bring an entire neighborhood of Americans into the country, give college educated Nigerians menial labor jobs, that is our way!!!!

Yes and no. Owing nuclear weapons only encourages others to own nuclear weapons. At the same time, its good to have them incase some country with a radical leader decides to use them against you. Owning them will make him think twice about using his. The world would be better off having no nuclear weapons but that will never happen. The only good purpose I can see for humans to have nuclear weapons is in the case of having to blow a comet or meteor off its course from smashing into the Earth, or in the unlikely event of having to fend off a malicious alien invasion.

Only if a government (I assume you mean government) is an established power will nukes deter attackers. Smaller countries that try to deveop nukes tend to be met with hostility, especially if they are not aligned with a powerful country.

Weapons are made to be used (and have been used before) and they have no threat effect if they aren´t. So on that standpoint, how can it be safe? Especially for the ones on the receiving end?

I agree with HungryGuy, with one exception. I think there are plenty of countries that would strike with a nuke simply because they feel superior to the other country. Even if that country had nukes of its own.

North Korea's so insane it's actually comical, and they're not the only ones. Until we're the only ones with nuclear devices, we have no business disarming ours. Those who believe we will be safe in doing so are naive.

I am just now completing the assembly of a DIY (Do It Yourself) compact fission device in my basement. I plan to test it on the Bikini Atoll, where the U.S. tested its nuclear devices 70 years ago. I just need to persuade those pesky natives to move away from the place where their ancestors have lived for countless generations, until the radioactive cesium-137 degrades through a couple half-lives. Let's see, one half-life is 30 years.... Hmm, I guess we'll just have to round those natives up and stick 'em on a reservation. I'm sure they'll understand that it's for the good of the nation. Not their nation, but you know, the USA, which is the world's most important nation.

the only way a nuke helps make you safe is through MAD (mutualy assured destruction) and the only way that works is when everyone with nukes cares more about their own well being than they do about hurting you. this is why the NPT was created because the less total nations that have the nuke the less likely a psychotic fringe leader will be in posession of the nuke. personaly having the nuke does not make your individual nation safer... but strong nongenocidal nations having them and having the commitment to glass anyone who uses them in violation of the NPT makes the whole world safer because someone launching nukes against a rival ensures their own deaths.
you can not uninvent the nuke and even if the USA had not invented it... it would have been discovered by now anyway and possibly sent the world down a bloodier historical path... imagine if hitler had beaten us to nuclear deployment... his government had the will to obliterate his enemies, they started the war and had no desire to end it short of global domination. the nuke ended WWII

If everybody is sane, then if everybody has a nuke then the fear of retaliation will prevent someone from attacking. The problem is when we have religious fantatics in the world who don't care if they die "for the cause." If and when they get nukes, then Mutually Assured Destruction won't be a deterrent any more.

Only if you're a major (and preferably western) power. A small country with a nuke will quickly be branded as a 'rogue state' and land on the receiving end of all the paranoia the US can drum up.
