Should it be mandatory for all US citizens to serve some time in the military (men and women)?

• I believe that both men and women should serve for at least some period of time. Women don't need to be on the front lines unless they sign up for it (like it is now). But I think that learning how to follow and lead in a structured enviornment would be beneficial to the growth of not only the people, but the country as a whole.

• actually just to correct one thing women CANNOT serve in combat period they have no choice in the matter(has something to do with the fact that given a choice the guy will always save the woman first or something or at least thats what ive been told) and although yeah i belive alot of people deserve the good old boot camp woop ass its not for everyone and if we have to make it so everyone serves the standards will get lowered to accomadate them... wich will make the point of sending them there useless

• To correct you both, women are in combat. There are no "front lines" anymore. Women serving in Motor T units regularly see combat.
  Women in the US are still disqualified from serving in most combat arms related fields, such as infantry. They can serve in artillery units and most combat flying fields.

• yes women do see combat but there not in "combat" groups the offical stance is there in a support role yes there are no "front lines" but they dont put women in "front line groups"

• I was not so-called soldier material when I joined the Marines at 17, as I am sure you were not, right out of high school, but I damn sure learned while in San Deigo. I was a mere reservist at the time, but when I got my degree, I quickly went to Quanico, did 15, leaving as a Colonel. You can be taught to be anything. Think about how you would feel being grabbed of the street, because you were drafted. Much rather a kid coming knowing it is something you have to do!!!! I would make it so that you can't enter college until you are able to show proof, you went to bootcamp and finishing school for your MOS!

  I waiting a little longer before I went to the Island. 27 when I stood in the yellow footprints.
  All males should have to do a minimum 2 years in their pick of services.

• College can wait, going through boot camp gave me focus, and I matured, I would not have been ready at 16 to be on a college campus...

• Super all the power to ya but that is not the case for everyone everyone is different which is why there is no "cookie cutter" solution to what people should do with there life. some people have to screw up first before they can hit the right track others need some guidence others are good right off the bat wich is why i dont think it hsould be mandatyory that people go through the army first before college...not even mentionting the burden it would put on our already debt ridden economy paying for all of these soilders
