No, violence goes against the very name of the religion. The word Islam is derived from the same root word which gives us salaam, meaning peace. The greeting of Muslims all over the world is Salaam eleikom meaning peace be with you (which btw was the greeting used by Jesus too, see Luke 24:36 for an example). The desire is that peace should be spread all over the world.
One way in which someone could ‘promote violence’ is to urge people not engaged in violence to get off their backsides and go and shoot somebody, knife them or, if they are that useless, at least punch an old lady. Another way would be to warn people that they are committing sin if they slow down on their violent behaviour. I am not aware of any authentic source in Islam doing any such thing.
By contrast, for thirteen years the idolaters of Mecca persecuted, tortured, imprisoned and killed the small but growing band of Muslims. Every time they wanted to fight back Mohammed told them he hadn’t received authority to take up armed resistance. When the Muslims finally managed to flee to Madinah, the Meccans (idolaters) waged war against Madinah. Permission to fight now came in HQ 22:39 which said “Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged” and HQ 22:40 describes one category of people allowed to fight as “Those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: Our Lord is God”. However, the permission to fight is only valid as long as the reason for fighting is there. If the reason is defeated or voluntarily ceases then the permission to fight ceases also, or, as HQ 2:193 puts it “And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for God (ie people are free to worship God). But if they (the persecutors) desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrongdoers.” There are HQ verses and Hadeeth (anecdotal reports) which stipulate rules of engagement. Amongst them is HQ 9:6 which says “And if anyone of the idolaters (enemy combatant) seeks thy protection, then protect him so that he may hear the word of God (and perhaps seek peace); and afterward convey him (escort him) to his place of safety. That is because they are a folk who know not (about God).” This was about 1400 years ago, long before the Geneva convention and I doubt if even that says you escort your enemy to his safety!
There are many instances where the HQ speaks out against violence. For example it says in HQ 5:32 “whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had: saved the life of all mankind.”

Christianity was created by king Constantine, 300 years after the death of Jesus, in order to place the hierarchy system and have more control. So he hired "priests", "bishops", and "holy men" to come with the bible for the purpose of indoctrinating innocent souls..:)........Do to evidence and facts JESUS is Muslim...Mary always wore a hi jab.
by CANON007 on December 19th, 2009
in the movie passion of the Christ, you will hear Jesus calling out to his father ALLAH(GOD)...ALLAH which means GOD in Islam.

Soz WGMan but he's kind of right, if he's saying Eloah. Its Hebrew for God and its where the word Allah comes from. Both are the same guy, kind of. He's wrong about Jesus and Mary being Muslims though, they didn't have those till Mo started his Koranic Construction plant, It was based on Modified Bible technology but certainly at a later time.

Atheists don't need to hide behind Atheism to kill someone.
If they decide to do it, they do. However, unlike religious fanatics, if caught-- they'll own up to it.
Not hide behind an imaginary god and fix the blame or 'necessity' of such onto it.

Henry VIII and his mass murder of all things Catholic, promoted by the COE. Repeated by his daughter Liz.
The Salem witch trials? or were these guys Catholics pretending to be Christians?
mtndewman40: The argument is it promotes violence just as much as Christianity.

moongrim your an athiest of course you would say that , what i actualy said no true christian will kill any body and your saying no muslim will kill another muslim they will however kill any body that is not muslim there`s the difference . honestly moongrim you are so uneducated on the matter , your atheism blinds your head
by hong kong phooey on February 10th, 2010
He was asking if they would kill another person, not another Muslim. The killing in the end comes down to the individual. There are Muslims who believe all other religions should be killed, there are also Christians who believe all other religions should be killed.
His Atheism gives him an unbiased view of both. I'd say it leaves his mind more open rather than blinds him, as it does mine.

@LePoupon...The question isn't about other religions, the OP is ONLY about Islam, not any other beliefs,,this is going nowhere if you can't stay on topic.
Does Islam Promote Violence?
Related:
islam,
promote
For most Americans, Islam was a religion that lived on the periphery of their lives, a culture they caught glimpses of in movies and television shows. Then came the tragic events of 9/11, and suddenly the Western world was desperately grasping to understand a religion they knew precious little about. With all the questions swirling around the true nature of Islam, none has been asked more than this: Does Islam promote violence?
Where in this question do you see any other belief system in question?
by mtndewman44 on February 10th, 2010
atheism only leaves you open to decieving spirits that block the truth of the living god as for christians believing other religions should be killed that`s a lie , the catholic who claims to be christian is the real proplem for christianity , catholics side with the muslim they done it in ww2 for instance
by hong kong phooey on February 10th, 2010
wild guess man; So Henry VIII was a Catholic when he was killing Catholics?
And the mass murder of pagans or even suspected pagans was only done by Catholics?
You believe that atheism leaves to open to deceiving spirits, I believe religion leaves you open to deceiving people.
Like Moongrim pointed out, Hitler was a Christian who wanted to kill Jews, so its not really a lie. Nor is it saying all Christians believe this.
mtndewman40; Not everything is a simple yes or no answer. Its not moving off topic its only adding to the topic to bring the discussion into context.
The answer being that many religions promote or have promoted violence at some time. Some individuals use religion to promote violence. It happens in many religions.
Its the comment section, expanding on an answer. Moving of topic would be saying kittens are fluffy, they promote violence.

I'm not going to be a Christian and for very good reason.
You people are dopes. Why is it that so many "not-real" christians can impersonate "real" christians for so very long, and the only time you "real" christians catch on- is AFTER the Media gets involved?
You folks are C-L-U-E-L-E-S-S.
by Moongrim on February 11th, 2010
@ LePoupon,
Who's topic are you adding to?It isn't the topic of this question at all, nowhere does it ask for the catholic comparison, the Jewish comparison, not even the Mormon's comparison,it is only about one religion,ISLAM,does that one religion promote violence. This isn't a they did this so we are justified to do it also.It isn't about the past,it IS about today.
There are enough 'theologists-in-the-making' with opinions about too many things like this,,stay on topic or don't,I won't entertain others, like you,who can't seem to stay with one focused discussion.
End of transmission.Period.

All Religions promote violence.
by Moongrim on February 14th, 2010
And after all this we have been discussing, the OP has never responded to their statement..Are they weak in their beliefs,,do their comments have no backbone,no grounds and therefor are baseless?
by mtndewman44 on February 14th, 2010
Good point read what i posted i think u will agree.
by AvtomatKalashnikov on March 14th, 2010
Bottom line...those muslims who say islam does not promote violence say so because that is what they honestly believe..they have removed themselves from the parts of islam that call for and mandate violence..good for them..they have purified the religion for themselves..but for the muslims who live quran word for word as it was intened to be practiced..it is the most violent "religion" ever invented by mankind
by Happy-Dance on April 18th, 2010
Every religion which gets out of it's temple and scores the ruling power can get harsh and violent according to today's standards regardless their names. But It's not just religions. Canibalism, racialism, satanism, or ideologies like Communism, Marxism or even democracy caused as many, if not more, hatred and villainies in the history too. Drug dealers, mafias, et cetra can also be added to the list.
by Sokoot on July 4th, 2010
But how many of the 'isms' also teach that they are 'inherently peaceful' Sokoot?
by Moongrim on July 5th, 2010
Yes, peace and freedom are the primary promises to the followers of the religions which will never be fulfilled as long as religions are used as a tool to expand power. But those ideologies have their own promises which they normally aren't faithful to either. Communism for example has another appealing promise, equality. But in action this kind of system only causes corruption.

Question:
Does the Quran really contain dozens of verses promoting violence?
Summary Answer:
The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.
Unlike nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence, the verses of violence in the Quran are mostly open-ended, meaning that they are not restrained by the historical context of the surrounding text. They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subjective as anything else in the Quran.
Most of today's Muslims exercise a personal choice to interpret their holy book's many calls to violence according to what their own moral preconceptions find justificable. Apologists cater to their preferences with tenuous arguments that gloss over historical fact and generally do not stand up to scrutiny. Still, it is important to note that the problem is not bad people, but bad ideology.
Unfortunately, there are very few verses of tolerance and peace to abrogate or even balance out the many that call for nonbelievers to be fought and subdued until they either accept humiliation, convert to Islam, or are killed. Muhammad's own martial legacy - and that of his companions - along with the remarkable stress on violence found in the Quran have produced a trail of blood and tears across world history.
The Quran:
Quran (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]... but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah." The historical context of this passage is not defensive warfare, since Muhammad and his Muslims had just relocated to Medina and were not under attack by their Meccan adversaries. In fact, the verses urge offensive warfare, in that Muslims are to drive Meccans out of their own city (which they later did). The use of the word "persecution" by some Muslim translators is thus disingenuous (the actual Muslim words for persecution - "idtihad" - and oppression - a variation of "z-l-m" - do not appear in the verse). The actual Arabic comes from "fitna" which can mean disbelief, or the disorder that results from unbelief or temptation. Taken as a whole, the context makes clear that violence is being authorized until "religion is for Allah" - ie. unbelievers desist in their unbelief.
Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things."
Quran (2:216) - "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not." Not only does this verse establish that violence can be virtuous, but it also contradicts the myth that fighting is intended only in self-defense, since the audience was obviously not under attack at the time. From the Hadith, we know that this verse was narrated at a time that Muhammad was actually trying to motivate his people into raiding merchant caravans for loot.
Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."
Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority". This speaks directly of polytheists, yet it also includes Christians, since they believe in the Trinity (ie. what Muhammad incorrectly believed to be 'joining companions to Allah').
Quran (4:74) - "Let those fight in the way of Allah
