I love this stuff. The Earth was here for billions of years before Homo sapiens made the scene. Notwithstanding a cosmic collision or the Sun going Super Nova, it will be here long after the our species is gone without a trace.
It is hubris (at best) to imagine that the little pretenders who wiggle and wobble on the moving Earth's crust have what it takes to destroy the Earth.

Wow, so negative.

Science and technology is advancing so quickly that we will develop sources of energy that do not pollute the environment, and manufacturing techniques that do not depleat our natural resources.

It is not that we will "salvage" the earth, it is that we will stop being destructive before any major damage is done.

You grossly overestimate humanity's abilities -- we may screw up tiny little specks of the entire planet; but we couldn't destroy the whole thing even if we wanted to.
