Hamsters are small and easy to maintain and tame---important attributes for a child's pet. Children tend to neglect their responsibilities with cats and dogs due to the increased responsibilities (such as walking, litter changing and feeding). Because hamsters live in cages, you and your children can monitor them at all times.
Some hamsters have bad temperaments and could bite a child if handled incorrectly. Like any other animal bite, an untreated hamster bite can become infected. Because hamsters breed in large numbers, pet stores do not always evaluate them for temperament problems.
Also, hamsters are nocturnal animals, so they will play around in their cages at night---sometimes noisily.
Overall, docile hamsters do make good pets for children. If you choose to buy one, make sure to check its temperament before introducing it to a child. Pick it up and handle it a few times to see whether it is prone to biting. Consider finding a hamster breeder who works with easily tamed and docile breeds such as the black bear and golden hamster. To prevent sleeping problems, place the hamster's cage outside of the child's room.
