Just tell yourself that nothing is going to happen if you don't smoke. You're not going to die, faint, be sick, have a disaster. So when you have a craving just remind yourself that life will still go on even if you don't smoke and you may well find you can cope with it better than you do now. When you have a craving, drink a glass of water and/or go out for a walk. Exercise keeps you busy and passes time and you cannot smoke whilst doing it. It also makes you feel much better. Good luck. I gave up 11 years ago cold turkey and never looked back until 8 months ago on a fine summer evening I decided to try a friend's cigarettes. I smoked for 8 months and have given up cold turkey once again. If I can do it, you can too.

Good luck on quitting. I used Chantix, it worked pretty well. It's tough, but you can do it.

Mike I used to smoke for 30 years.
    here is how I stopped.
You heared of brain washing ? or brain re-pattering?
    well I did it.
every time I lit a ciggie I said an affirmation ( not even thinking of it.) the affirmation was:

I let go of smoking. It is unhealthy. I am done

after 2 years saying it with each ciggie, one morning I wanted to lite one after breakfast and voila... I was totally UNABLE to do so. I put it down. the lighter package and ciggie remained on the table for 2 years. NEVER had the desire to smoke again. that is 16 years ago. I never ever had the desire to smoke again.I changed my mind.

YOUR mind has to be changed.
forcing self doesn't work. causes a lot of suffering.
    cheers.

God uses answerbag? In all seriousness, HANG IN THERE! The first month will be hard, but after that it will be a piece of cake! How do I know? I have OCD and have been addicted to a few things, excluding cigarettes and controlled substances. It sucks at the beginning but you won't die from NOT smoking -- it's the contrary. Just keep enduring the pain, you'll get through it.

Hello mikedsign. You could not have got a heavier or longer-serving smoker than me. I tried the maximum-strength nicotine lozenges and astonishingly found them almost as good as smoking. So I simply and easily switched from smoking to lozenges. I didn't save any money and it was, of course, just continuing my addiction, but I could get my fix without the side effects of smoke and complaints all around me. After a year I switched to maximum strength nicotine chewing gum. Again, no problem. After another year I switched to ordinary chewing gum which was not easy but not hard. However (this is true) when I came off ordinary chewing gum, 2 years later, it was hell. Seriously. Best wishes.
