It wasn't a 'relationship'. The guy and I were just friends. We only had sex three times in total. Kind of a 'friends with benefits' thing.

Two plus years. We were 16 at the time and stayed together through high school.

Almost a year on a regular basis and over 3 years when we were both on home visits from college.

    I appreciate your comments.

I know that people sometimes make a distinction between "giving one's virginity" and "having one's virginity taken". In this context I consider the phrases interchangeable. I wanted an easily understood phrase that was less sterile and clinical than, for example, "had your initial experience of penetrative vaginal intercourse".

The objective is to use the duration of the relationship after the addition of sexual intercourse as a gauge of the couple's mutual valuation of a sexual relationship. Given a continuum stretching from, e.g., "Sex is a sacred and very highly regarded activity, to be reserved only for the most tightly bonded and committed couples", to "Sex is an enjoyable but frivolous activity and lack of sexual experience is a nuisance that needs to be corrected.", individuals would be hard pressed to quantify their position. Duration of the relationship after first intercourse is a more tangible, easily measured way to gauge the perceived significance of sex at that point in a person's life.

The measure is admittedly rather coarse, but this Forum allows only 5 responses. For example, the "single intercourse" case really should be broken into "rape or coercion", "a compensated partner", and "a mutual consenting random or anonymous seduction". Similarly the last two choices should probably be expanded to 3 categories, with demarcations at about 18 months, and somewhere in the 5 - 7 year range. A more significant shortcoming (but extremely difficult to address) is the convolution of both partners' attitudes and values: was the dissolution of the relationship largely attributable to one partner, or both?
