According to the American Kennel Club, German Shepherds are one of the most popular breeds in the U.S. Their loyalty and fun-loving nature make them easy to have around the house, while their non-hostile fearlessness can provide a family with a level of protection. The breed also tends to get along well with children.
German shepherds are large dogs with a lot of energy. They require ample exercise and are not well suited to apartment living. They are also long-haired dogs that shed regularly and consequently require frequent grooming. German shepherds also need a great amount of socialization and exposure to varying environments in order to fare well.
German shepherds are great pets for those who have the time to invest in their care. It is probably not the best breed for city living or families who are constantly on the go, but when provided with ample exercise and attention they can make wonderful pets.
