Let me post what Theodore Roosevelt thought about immigrants and being in America. I found this quite interesting.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

    Theodore Roosevelt 1907

    GeorgeGee left Answerbag (What's this?)

Yes, it needs to be the OFFICIAL language, but not the ONLY language spoken or written. If we say "anything goes" with respect to language, there are some serious consequences:
    1) Public schools must provide education in any and every language that walks in their doors. Thus they must get rid of their library, gym, art, just about everything else, just to pay for the linguists to meet their language requirements.
    2) Every officer in the army must speak every possible language in order to accommodate recruits who speak any possible language. And of course troops can't be separated by language because that's "racist."
    3) Government forms, street signs etc, must be printed in every possible language, and submissions must be allowed in any possible language.
The list goes on, but this adequately illustrates the real life problems. By having English as the OFFICIAL language, it would only be required for OFFICIAL purposes, it does not prevent people from using other languages at home, etc. The truth is that English is the semi-official language now, and an inconsistent mish-mash of accommodations and rules exists. The state will provide a Chinese translator (sometimes) if you're on trial for murder, but not for your road test for your drivers license. You can press 2 for Spanish on many government recordings, but you can't press 27 for Swahili.

It makes sense to only have 1 official language for every country, otherwise confusion arises. Besides, we shouldn't have to bend over backwards for the illegals and a few Japanese and Vietnamese immigrants. I'm getting tired of this, "America has to bow down to everyone else" attitude.

Is this a serious question? WHERE in the world do you go that there is even an option as to what other language is spoken?? I lived in Germany for 17 years. You call on the phone, there is no option for Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, or any other language other than the one of the country that you are living in. Why are we so afraid we are going to hurt somebody s feelings if they can't speak the language of the land? English is the Language of the Land, learn it or get someone to help you, but it should not even be up for discussion.

That's silly. Our official language should be whatever all our laws are written in, and what language the majority speak, not whatever you're talking about.

Why are people willing to give up their previous homes and come to America? Why would they want to preserve what they left behind when that would leave them at a disadvantage here? The freedom offered by America is not dependent on multiculturalism or knowing many languages, but on the INDIVIDUAL stepping up and taking control of his OWN life. A single language for all makes that a helluva lot easier than trying to wade through a Balkanized America where every ghetto speaks a different language. We don't have to punish people for speaking other languages. But we do need to encourage everyone to be ABLE to communicate with everyone else. An official language would do just that.

I guess the real debate isn't about whether someone speaks English at all - it's the LEVEL of English they speak. Most immigrants will master English OK to perfect, some poorly.

I believe most immigrants try their absolute best, but it's not as easy for older immigrants to learn English flawlessly. That's of course hard to understand for those Americans that never attempt to learn a second language at all.

My dad speaks English well, though not perfect. He will have no issues communicating with everyday native English speakers. But when it comes to making decisions in politics, health, insurance and other government related issues, I believe it is of importance to support an individual and empower them in any way we can to make an INFORMED choice - even if this means providing translations in multiple languages. This is to ensure everyone understands the rules!

You can only try so hard, yet we shouldn't punish someone for making an effort.

Also..umm.. WEAK SAPIR-WHORF HYPOTHESIS ANYONE!?!!??! Seriously.. multilingualism is FAR SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY to officiating one language only.

Yes, it shouldn't be the only language, but everyone should be expected to have a grasp of it if they actually consider themselves 'American'.
It would be nice, however, if America made English their official language, they learnt to spell using English spellings, not American, because US English isn't really English at all, it's American.

I think we should make a new language, something better than all the rest. It should be easy for anyone to learn, efficient, clear and without all of the anomalies that we see in written and spoken English. We have linguists, let's give them something to do.

  • Yes. Although other languages can and should be taught in school, English is the standard of business in the US and therefore a great advantage to communicate it properly and with confidence. Native American languages should also be recommended as it is part of our heritage as well as other foreign languages to promote international understanding.

With immigration on the rise, many people are scared that conflict will arise in regards to communication. This idea is absurd. We are all humans, and we all understand emotions. People who are mute and deaf communicate with others everyday. Why should we make people learn a new language when we all speak "Human"?

Why English? The whole point of the American Revolution was to kick uppity English redcoats out of the country. Do you remember why we light off firecrackers on the 4th of July? It's Indepence Day! Independence from the English!

The whole point of the original Boston Tea Party was to poke a sharp stick into King George's eye. The neo-redcoats of today look and act like rejects from the Zombie Factory.

And now you want to apologize, crawl on your belly, and beg the English to take us back and let us fruck up their language even more?

I say we dump English and switch to Latin, or Chinese, or French. German would be OK; the language is close enugh to English to make it easy to learn.

Spanish would be good. We'll all be speaking Spanish in a matter of months anyway. It's easy and fun to learn, with few exceptions to its rules of grammar, spelling, and syntax. It'll be easier for uppity Uncle Sam to learn Spanish than asking the Mexicans to learn English. What's in it for them?

    America is in crisis.

    Terrorism is a real threat.

We don't even know who the over 12 million illegal immigrants are.

    Time to get real.

    Get tough.

Make English the official language and scrutinize who, what and why people are in our country.

If anyone is innocent, loves America, and respects our heritage, I see no reason for them to resent complying with new requirements and regulations.

Racial diversity was never intended to become a nation divided over language. Oh, we must not 'Profile'.

...Yet, that is what we have become, to the advantage of those who come here to use our system, disregard laws and, to the extreme, rein terror upon us.

Those using our system and disregarding the English standard are the ones who cry loudest for their 'rights'. It is always 'about them' and not 'About America'... That is the 'red flag' not to be ignored.

    Yes.

There is nothing wrong with having an official language. It makes all kinds of things easier.

Of course there should be ESL classes for immigrants and especially children entering school who don't know English. And it's good business to have multilingual staff and written materials where appropriate.

I also don't have a problem with multilingual DMV materials since you don't need to be a citizen to vote.

But requiring sufficient English to read a ballot seems perfectly fine to me. Most countries have similar conditions.

Well, the way I see it is, anyone who thinks the language of the U.S shouldm't be English are the people, who arn't from America. But then again, we ALL originate from another land, so I guess I can't really say that. But English is the Language we speak here in America, so isn't it kind of slefish or lazy to want your own language instead of the one native, to this place. When you go to a different country, the're going to speak somthing different, you can't go Mexico and demand the country speak English just because you do. I speak 8 different languages, and have lived in Korea for 5 years of my life, and I learned their language. Fact is when you go to different places, people speak different things, and I think people should get used to it...Or just learn the language.

This was a specific question, not an abstract one…. Naturally, you took my comments apart, and with total disregard for common sense standards in America, took everything point by point to quintessentially uphold those who are too lazy to learn a new language.

To Fruitpunch: You describe yourself eloquently in ‘self description’... Why don’t you walk the talk? So sad that Natural Abstractor killed you laughing. If it takes two to flip one off, then both must be limp biscuits and it’s no wonder America is going down the tubes.
