    Mine can, I have to put my finger over one end of the straw and release it once I get it in his mouth. He knows that's what I'm going to do and he swallows when the water is released into his mouth. He is even better at it if it's a vanilla milkshake, doesn't spill a drop.

    Their mouths are not built to be syphons. Their tongues have just been x-rayed whilst drinking and show that they slap their tongue down and it pulls up a column of water. They do not cup it in.

    (To drink through a straw, you have to be able to form a seal around the straw, then form a vaccuum in your mouth and then swallow what comes into your mouth.)
