Actually that did happen. All the food in the refrigerator spoiled there is still candle wax residue and a burn hole on a piece of furniture.
It was not easy for sure.

I'd buy lots of candles and flashlights and buy Board Games and Uno.

Move to an out of the area hotel. I guess I'm getting soft in my old age.

That happened to me twice in North Carolina. The first was due to a hurricane when the weather was warm. The second was caused by an ice storm, which was the worst due to sub-freezing temperatures and the absence of heat. Horrible!

After the ice storm, I arranged for the installation of a whole-house generator that will fully service the home with power for five days if everything in the house were running, much longer if power is conserved, which, of course, it would be.

I'm not in that home right now, but am living in Florida. With the approaching hurricane Irene, I've contacted my neighbors to let them know they are welcome to hunker down at my place in the unlikely event that power goes down...unlikely, since my home is about 100 miles west of where the oncoming storm is predicted to hit.

The longest,I have been without power is 3 days when I lived in Florida, a series of tornadoes hit and devastated half the town I lived in.
Hot, humid & miserable but we kept the fridge door closed and nothing spoiled not even the cole slaw !?!
