It's not a "legal" matter ... it's just not what schools are all about.

Kids need to learn self-control and how to express themselves intelligently .. schools try to give kids the tools to do that ..

Anyone can cuss -- that takes no skill ... better to learn how to communicate in a proactive way that will help them be successful in the world.

No. Humans sometimes do things that others find wrong/offensive. Kids will cuss. And have sex. And get into fights with each other. And no one should be prosecuted for any of this crap we do not need the police getting involved with every little thing the police are not there to step in for parents and teachers to do their damn jobs. If YOU don't want your kid cussing, YOU take care of it! If the teachers don't want cussing, then THEY take care of it. What is this crap with the police becoming a nation of wussified people where the cops are the big Nanny for everyone to make sure people behave. Oh yeah, someone brought up smoking. That's another good point. They don't need to be given tickets for that either, ridiculous.

Not sure if it should be "illegal" ... but it certainly shouldn't be tolerated.

No. The law shouldn't get involved in any speech that doesn't directly harm or endanger people (like inciting riots, slander, etc). Cussing is no more than unpleasant to hear - at worst.

A school, however, is perfectly within it's rights making reasonable rules regarding speech with school based punishments for infraction. And behaving in a civil, polite manner is perfectly reasonable.

If cussing was illegal then most of the kids nowadays couldn't talk at all!
They can't tell you about anything without using the "F" or "MF" or "SoB" or "S" words to describe it! And all females are "B" or whores!
They think they are "cool", but, in my book they are just "STUPID" sounding!
Real men and women don't need cuss words to cuss you out.

Kids swear because they are not supposed to.
Making it even more taboo won't stop it.

Trying to ban things to make them go away is the logic that keeps teen smoking and drinking alive.

And unlike smoking and drinking that have real negative health consequences, these are harmless words. If you are harmed by a word, I suggest you just lock yourself in a padded room right now and cry, because life is only going to get worse for you.

I think that would be taking the nanny state too far . While cussing and swearing shouldn't be encouraged among young adults , you truly cannot make it illegal . What next, putting adults in stocks for using profane language ?

Extreme censorship laws never work, and to put them on adolescents who are bound to be in the peak of their rebellious phase we would be filling juvenile halls faster than we are filling prisons. I don't even want to think of how fucked up things would be if we lived in a society where a large chunk of young adults learned most of their life skills in a detention center. Most of crime is done by the young anyways and with something like that I would bet you would see a significant increase in repeat offenders in the long run.
