    It's an emergent property of neurological activity.

    Definitely at least in part occurring at the biological level, since we already know this much. It is known to correlate both with activity in the brain, chemical use - including recreational drugs, sleeping drugs and anaesthesia, as well as physical damage to the brain.

    It is not known to correlate directly with the big toe, the heart, the liver etc etc, but I hope people can still be honest enough to admit that it at least correlates with brain activity.

    Of course modern research goes much further than this. By correlating attention studies, such as when people first notice something in their field of vision or their hearing it is possible to correlate the distinction between physical sub-conscious brain activity and physical conscious activity in the brain. So far researchers have managed to not only correlate conscious activity with regions across the brain, but also with certain neurons.

    I wonder though. The 'spiritual' argument (and I highlight it because there is no working definition of it yet) always focuses on consciousness, but it seems most activity is occurring sub-consciously. Why the need to not also define the sub-conscious as spiritual - or would this be taking so much away from the brain that it would be more obviously silly? I suspect there is also a temptation in magical thinking to promote free will, and since the sub-conscious often not only appears to be an area that will is not expressed, but often to even be opposed to free will then theology and 'new-age-isms' have left it well alone.

    Consciousness is instantiated in the mind and the mind is instantiated in the brain. That simple, so not religious or new age nonsense necessary. ( and just because the problem is not solved is no reason to insert your favorite ideology )

    I believe in a "universal consciousness", from which we can each then draw from. But, unlike a well which may dry up if too many people draw from it; I believe that this universal consciousness is not simply "infinite", but possibly ever-expanding.

    So, just as I believe that the universe can be described as eternal, so too its consciousness.

    Peace Truth and Love...:)

    light in dark in quantum dispersion.
    Ridiculous. Totally reliable. Because it is simple as dumb is nails.
    Complex systems that baffle us are built with the foundational building block of creation. To find it is oppisite of intellectual. Extremely dumbed down.

    Conscience literally means co-knowledge or knowledge with oneself unlike all other earthly creatures, we possess a God-given capacity to know ourselves

    2 Timothy 4:1,2 vers 1 However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired
    utterances and teachings of demons, 2 by the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, marked in their conscience as with a branding iron;

    Some people just turn their conscience off and let their heart drag them off to death. really, the conscience is best used as an internal judge,not a license to judge others. Remember Jesus words:"Stop judging that you may not be judge" Matthew 7:1

    2 Corinthians 4:1,2 vers 1 That is why, since we have this ministry according to the mercy that was shown us, we do not give up; 2 but we
    have renounced the underhanded things of which to be ashamed, not walking with cunning, neither adulterating the word of God, but by making the truth manifest recommending ourselves to every human conscience in the sight of God.

    Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 vers 5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.
