When choosing a place to eat do you go for locally owned one or a chain owned restaurant? Does it matter whether you are home or traveling?

    On the odd occasions that we eat out it is always in a privately owned restaurant with a varied menu of freshly prepared food.

    I like to eat local, get a feel for the local food and tastes. We are lucky not to have any chains down here, I would have to travel up to Edinburgh for a Pizza Express, etc.

    Chains taste very generic...when I travel I want to experience the local food of the country that I am In. (Except for chapulines...I just couldn't do those:) (dried grasshoppers)

    If we're at home, we just go where we can find good food at a reasonable price. It doesn't matter to us if it's a chain or local.

    If we're traveling, we do the same if we know the chains available -- if not, we usually ask for recommendations from locals or the hotel.
