Cholesterol is a naturally occurring lipid found in food. It is an essential component of a healthy body according to the American Heart Association. It helps build cell membranes and is used in hormone production, among other functions it has in the brain and blood stream. A healthy person who doesn't have high cholesterol numbers should consume no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol daily.
If you have high cholesterol or have already developed heart disease, the American Heart Association recommends consuming less than 200 milligrams daily. As part of a Healthy Heart diet, you should eat fewer foods with saturated fats, low fat dairy products and eat more fruits and vegetables. You should also consume foods, such as fish, that are high in omega-3 fatty acids to help lower your cholesterol.
Although cholesterol is a natural substance produced in the liver and obtained in foods, too much will increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Your blood cholesterol level for LDL (bad cholesterol) should be under 129 mg/dL. If your LDL levels are over 130 mg/dL you begin to be at risk for heart disease with serious risk starting at 169 mg/dL. Talk to your doctor about a diet low in fat, combined with an exercise program for optimal heart health.
