As for coffee, I'll will take mine black and in moderation. Tried tea, but it never gave me the lift I needed to start my day. Two cups in the morning and no more the rest of the day. As for coffee being bad for you, not many people get out of life alive. I have my peccadilloes and life without good food, good wine, coffee and chocolate would be less enjoyable.

How many foods have doctors criticized, demonized, and ultimately tried to destroy that they eventually had to change their tunes on?

They shoved margarine down our throats for decades, only to later find out that it is actually WORSE for you than the butter they were trying so hard to crucify. While the butter contains beneficial compounds that margarine did not.

Are eggs good for you or bad for you this week? They claim something different so often, it makes my head spin.

Don't forget about salt. Decades spend trying to find something bad to blame on salt, and all they can say is that it will maybe, possibly raise blood pressure in a small number of people. That's it.

Chocolate. Alcohol like wine. And now it turns out that removing the fat from milk makes it LESS healthy, because we cannot properly absorb the vitamin A without fat. So, whole milk is now better for you than skim.

We keep hearing more and more about the health benefits of foods that doctors tried so hard to crucify. After all the times they have been wrong about certain foods, foods they tried so hard to destroy, why does ANYONE listen to anything doctors have to say about food? They've obviously proved they are full of shit and don't know anything about food.

Has anyone even mentioned the fact that coffee contains some pretty powerful antioxidants, claimed to be even more beneficial than those of green tea?

I see nothing wrong with drinking a cup or two every day, but as with anything, moderation is a very personal thing. Some can drink a glass of wine, or eat two pieces of chocolate, where others cannot restrain themselves.

As with anything, get a professional opinion on whether coffee suits your lifestyle - and if you enjoy it and it causes no side-effects, go ahead and drink it.

Has anyone noticed that those who answered "no" just tell us why they like it or want it and none of them have gone on the defensive and tried to force their opinions, tastes, or values on anyone else? On the other hand, the majority of those who voted "yes" try to shove their "facts" down everyone's throat, trying to "turn" everyone to their "informed" way of thinking.

Seems just like the vegan/vegetarian debate all over again. Why do these people get so pissed that their "opposition" doesn't fall in line behind them and blindly follow? Why are these people such hate mongers and why do they feel so compelled to "save" everyone who doesn't think like they do? I think they are a bunch of weak-minded "followers", trying to convince themselves that they have made the right choice. If they were happy with their choice then they wouldn't be so hell-bent to prove to the rest of the world that they are right. In the words of Shakespeare, "The (lady) doth protest too much, methinks.”

These people are just pissed-off that most people have freedom of mind and do not choose to follow a crowd based on some rant or fad but rather, most people choose to be motivated by personal choice and are accountable to themselves, alone.

Im shocked at the ignorance regards coffee... Caffeine is a proven toxin, causing many easily misdiagnosed syptoms, while decaf is produced using formaldehyde :@
Dont always believe the hype, always read behind the 'ingredients' and do your research! Life begins when you give up cigarettes and coffee!

Some people are super sensitive to caffeine..they should stay away from it. I have read studies done on the beneficial effects of caffeine..among them is a lower incidence of breast cancer in those women who drink two or three cups of coffee a day. However, if you drink more than that, it becomes detrimental. :)

the most immediate effect is that you feel a slight ( almost completely unnoticeable, in my case because of tolerance ) rush, that combined with the diuretic effect which will dehydrate you in 20-30 min, will make you thirsty again. So you drink some more, pee some more, are even MORE dehydrated, drink some.... see where im going here? Dehydration produces electrolyte imbalance, the most noticeable effects will be felt as muscle weakness, heart arrythmias, and inability to think clearly.

Also disrupts normal sleep rhythms, so you do not get as much deep, Stage 4 sleep.

Each person must weigh benefits and side effects.

The Answer is Complicated. In large enough quantities a lot of things that are good for you, will kill you. Does that make it bad for you? No, we just need to fink the happy medium for each of us, that allow us to reap the benefits, without the pitfalls. Some of us will not be able to consume any at all, others of us can have lots more than the average person without ill effects. So go forth and doo what you need to do for yourself and leave me alone.

Caffeine "facts" off of independent web sources are 99% rubbish!
Go to the AMA or CDC, even the poison control center for real provable info & studies.
    Clinical trials of medications containing caffeine have been done by the thousands over the last 50 years. Here's what they found;
Caffeine causes increased heart rate. It causes increased blood pressure.
At levels consistent with "above average use" it was found to cause nervousness, sweating, gastric distress, respiratory depression, & sleeplessness. At mildly abusive levels it was shown to cause sleep apnea, aggressiveness, cognitive impairment, blurred vision & in some individuals it induced manic episodes & panic attacks. At "abusive" levels it caused heart palpitations, arrhythmias, tachycardia, & schizophrenic behavior in some participants.
At the highest level tested, which are LESS than the levels caused by drinking four "energy drinks" or twenty cups of coffee, it was found to cause significant coronary stress and mental disturbance in two-thirds of participants.
Long term studies of caffeine have shown that even moderate use on a daily basis increases the probability of heart disease, stroke, PAD, DVT's, & chronic fatigue, significantly.
There is evidence that it negatively effects diabetes, migrain headaches, gout, & a dozen other "chronic" diseases.
As to it's "positive" effects most are purely subjective. NO positive effects on heart heath have ever been proven. It also IS NOT a quality source of functional antioxidants, requiring high level abuse in order to achieve therapeutic levels of antioxidants.
Finally, when regular "users" of average amounts of caffeine were"weaned"off of it, they reported higher energy levels, clearer thinking, and an overall better feeling of well being.

Only the caffeine addicts, coffee and pop companies will answer no to this one. Dr. Regan Golob (docgolob.com) calls it "black death." Stop drinking caffeine for one month, check out how you feel, then have just one cup of coffee or a caffeinated soda and check in with your body again ...

    Retired From The Internet

If you need a drug to wake you up in the morning or keep you going, doesn't that tell you something is wrong with you?

Look into the mechanism that causes caffeine to have the affect that it does. Then decide if that's what you want to do to yourself every day of your life.

For most people it doesn't matter. If you're overweight and smoking and eating at mcdonalds and sitting around in front of the tv most of the day, then caffeine just isn't a factor in your health. If you're that bad off it might even help. However, if you are in good shape and eat well and sleep properly, you will really notice how caffeine makes life worse instead of better.

As with anything addictive, the mind will make up a million reasons why it's good, and instantly believe any reason it hears. Same as some smokers go as far as to think smoking protects them from lung cancer and some alcoholics think the booze is keeping them healthy by killing bacteria or viruses in their bloodstream.

Yes, but only if you become dependent on it. As with anything you become dependent on, you will need to keep increasing your dose to get the desired effect because you develop an immunity.

I periodically ween myself off of coffee for about a week if I feel I start to become dependent.

There are pros and cons to coffee drinking.

Pros: It's rich in antioxidants, may fend off Parkinson's, Alzheimers, type 2 diabetes, may protect against gallstones, kidney stones and liver cirrhosis.

Cons: It is considered a drug - a stimulant. Although it may help many with mental clarity, it is still a drug which may harm if used in excess. Coffee may also lead to high ldl cholesterol, heart disease, heart arrythmias, raise blood pressure, increase risk of osteoporosis, cause sleep disturbances and, once again - dependence.

Like alcohol, if one is NOT susceptible to over-indulging - it may have health benefits.

They say "everything in moderation". In other words, choose your own weapon.

I"m no doctor by any stretch of the imagination but I suppose that even moderate caffeine consumption could or would be bad for some people. I drink one cup of caffeinated coffee a day and have been doing so for many years. As I have green tea. So far, no problems. I have also consumed decaf coffee and tea. So if they ever outlaw caffeine, it wouldn't be any earth-shattering event, at least for me.

I remember one morning I was absolutely tired once I got out of bed (as you would be at 4am). I went to the service station, bought one 500ml red bull and a packet of 'No-Doz' caffeine pills. I went to work, had the redbull, 3 No-Doz pills and a cup of tea with 3 bags. It was not a good feeling, so moderate amounts instead of huge amounts should be ok!

Yes, it is bad. The reason it makes you feel wake and alert is because it works the same was a stress. You will produce stress hormones.

Using coffee to wake up or stay awake is a lot like someone putting stress on you. You can stay up all night with caffeine just like you could if someone told you your mother is in the hospital after having a stroke. Putting yourself in that state all the time is not good.

If caffeine is taken before exercise it's basically ok. That's the purpose of stress - to let you do something physical and run or fight and be alert. Your body is attacked and broken down to some extent to provide energy for this, but the exercise undoes that damage. Most people just drink a coffee and sit on their asses though, trading muscle for fat.

Caffeine in itself is not too bad in moderation, however, having voted yes I did so as there is a problem being seen by mental health professionals that teens are overdosing on caffeine through drinking the new(ish) soft drinks that contain caffeine and advertise that they give you a 'jolt'. Sure, we have indulged in Coke since the 40s but from memory it was only available in 6oz bottles, now kids buy super large bottles and drink one or more daily. It is not so much that caffeine is bad but drinking as much as teens do now is bad, ergo caffeine is bad. And, yes, it keeps you awake, but is that good? Bit like long-haul truck drivers taking speed to stay awake - was that good?

I drank coffee, up to a pot or more a day, for most of my adult life. Then I quit for two years because of all the medical hype, then a friend introduced me to flavored coffees and I've been drinking that for years. I enjoy the flavor and have seen no appreciable difference in how I feel when I drink it or when I don't. I think each person should determine their coffee intake by how it affects themselves individually. I don't think you should try to force others to believe or act the way you do. Your life and physical/medical experiences are different than everyone else.

Caffeine is a mild stimulant and is relatively harmless. Only Mormons who outright want ban all alcohol, soda/pop, coffee, and food they don't like are behind this together with the Robert Wood Johnson Trust Fund (BIG PHARMA pushing their agenda, take pills instead of coffee, take repackaged Welbutrin called Zyban (which is
Wellbutrin exactly the same chemical 100% but with a patent?!?!?!?) instead of smoking, take benzo's instead of drinking, the list is endless. Ritalin is closes related to Cocaine HCL in terms of chemical structure. A small dose with a 20% bio-availability when taken orally is boosted 4x to 80% when taken intranasally (sniffed-snorted) it can be best describe as a long lasting "poor mans coke". It is also an Amphetamine which is just as bad if not worse for the end consumer than Cocaine HCL.

yeah.. regardless if caffeine is good for YOU or not, it is without a doubt bad for the globe and all of our friends in poorer countries to the south. our 'wonderful' capitalist economy forces countries like peru to plant crops like coffee, sugar, and tobacco instead of food to feed their own hungry people (or to leave as integral rainforest) to feed our self-defeating addictions, above which coffee is one of the most pointless. plain old hokey hot water can be just as soothing or even more invigorating as coffee, and is way less harmful to the brain and body. but everytime you fiends drink an underpriced (because we have more money and guns than they do and we can force down the price) caffeine beverage, you're taking something away from a lot of people somewhere else.. oh yeah.. i guess most of you believe you're not strong enough to resist being hypnotized by starbuck's oozing atmosphere or tim horton's nicotine laced coffee. and your health? you KNOW what's good and not good for you, you just don't want to admit it, fiend. if you crave the bitter taste of coffee, just suck on my bitter remarks instead. -PEACE-
