The replacing HDD is very cheaper compared to buying a new X-BOX and even if warranty is ran out hopefully it can be used for another year or two, then you can buy a much up-to date X-Box.

replace the harddrive.... connecting the Xbox to your TV is more difficult than changing the harddrive.

actually, i didn't want vote this. but i cant give u other opinion until i vote.

As far as i know, Xbox360 console got high reparing rate.

I would crack the hard drive open to see if it is a standardized hard drive. If so, I would try to replace it for cheaper...if that won't work then I go buy me a new one..

- even if the components are standard, the interface is not. and knowing XBOX even if he has the level aptitude to make a XBOX/standard HD adaptor, there is probably some firmware required to Xbox to use the HDD, just like the xbox camera, they put serious effort into making a software mod to prevent people from using standard webcams on their xbox.
