The answer really is: Both. Yes, there is another Ayatollah Khomeini but he's not going anywhere fast because no, the army won't turn over power to him. The army never shot demonstrators here, only the police.

The Islamic leader waiting in the wings now is more like Mehdi Barzagan.

In Iran in 1979, the army only turned over power to Khomeini - a BIG mistake which cost tehm their lives by the way - Iran because Alexander Haig lobbied them too hard about civilian control of the military. They just should have done nothing on February 12, 1979. It was not going to happen again.

The greater danger in Tunisia is another Iraq. This has been such a surprise that Libya and Algeria and everybody else have not had time to organize.

It is important that the people in charge act quickly to establish a credible government. A really credible government.

The interim government is a little bit too afraid of subversion though.

(A private TV network owned by inlaws of the former president - in-laws note - they are not loyal to ben Ali but to themselves and may be looking for a new patron - apparently decided to promote a Communist cum labor leader who called for a strike - but nothing was ready for anything and who said anyone is going to listen to them?

Anyway the station was suddenly shut down. It's not these public words that really do anything.)

As much as I believe that a great many in Tunisia,Egypt and other Arab countries are yearning to embrace Jeffersonian Principles(democracy), it takes democrats to establish democracy.
The Muslim Brotherhood would more than likely win a democratically contested election, but that would be the end of the 'one man one vote' process. The M B would use free and fair elections to gain power and then discard it.
The M B being Islamists, would implement sharia, which is based on the Qur'an.These laws are set in stone and according to Muslims, there is no need for correction or amendments.
