    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

On One Hand: Health Benefits of Apples

Small chunks of apples provide a high-fiber, crunchy snack for dogs. Apples are loaded with phytonutrients and vitamins A and C. Because apples contain the fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6, they can contribute to a dog's healthy skin and glossy coat. It's not only safe but beneficial to leave the nutrient-packed skin on apples before feeding them to your pet.

On the Other: Seeds and Cyanide

Apple seeds are toxic if consumed in large quantities. The seeds contain a form of cyanide called amygdalin, which can affect how oxygen in the blood is carried throughout a dog's body. Unbroken seeds will pass harmlessly through a dog's digestive system. Apples should always be cored, and the seeds removed, before cutting them up into quarters or bite-sized chunks for your dog.

    Bottom Line

The benefits of feeding apples to dogs outweigh the potential problems caused by ingesting apple seeds. The rule of thumb should always be to limit the amount of any one kind of snack for your dog. Too many apple snacks can cause inflammation flareups in an older dog with arthritis. And, because apples are high in fiber, too many apples can cause diarrhea and loose stools in dogs. Apples provide vitamins, fatty acids and other nutrients that your dog might otherwise lack in its daily diet.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - The Ottawa Senators recalled forward Josh Hennessy on an emergency basis from the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.
Hennessy, in his first call-up to the National Hockey League this season, has 10 goals, 14 assists and eight penalty minutes playing in all 27 of Binghamton's games. He is tied for third in points with the B-Sens and is tied for the lead in plus-minus with +15. Hennessy has two game-winning goals and seven multi-point games, including two two-goal games. In 318 career AHL games over five professional seasons, Hennessy has scored 103 goals and added 129 assists while recording 197 penalty minutes.

Hennessy was recalled once by the Senators last season to play against the Vancouver Canucks on Feb. 19. He has one goal and four penalty minutes over 16 NHL and Ottawa career games. The 24-year-old made his NHL debut with the Senators during the 2006-07 season.

The native of Brockton, Mass., was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round, 43rd overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Hennessy played four seasons with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), collecting 291 points (128-163) and 162 penalty minutes in 269 games.

Hennessy was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks by San Jose with Tom Preissing for Mark Bell on July 9, 2006, and then traded to Ottawa by Chicago with Tom Preissing, Michal Barinka and Chicago's second-round choice in the 2008 entry draft (Patrick Wiercioch) for Martin Havlat and Bryan Smolinski on July 10, 2006.

The Binghamton Senators (13-10-3-1), who stand third in the East division, travel to Norfolk to face the Admirals on Friday, Dec. 18.
