Selected by the asker, Ed the Jetpacking Headbanger. (What's this?)

Actually based on statistical data conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, teenagers between the ages of 16-17 have the most difficult time gaining employment. According to the statistic for this year, it is said that 31.4% of teens in that age bracket were unemployed this year. But the more telling statistic is that 25.1% of persons were unemployed between the ages of 16-19 and 22.1% between the ages of 18-19. In comparison, persons who were 25 years and older ranked at 7.5% and finally those who were over 50 ranked at 6.6%.

The reasoning behind the stark contrast has to do with experience. Teenagers generally exude more inexperience compared to adults. So employers seek to hire those who are the most qualifed which usually are those that are within the 25 and older range. Senior citizens or those over the age of 50 see a sharp decline in unemployment because many of them retire and collect pensions from their 401 K plans, and Roth IRA's. But those who are teenagers suffer the most based on percentage due to inexperience. Employers don't want to take a risk on hiring someone that could be immature (not saying that all teens are) or they might fail in their responsibility because they have to learn so much in order to do the job well. It takes years of training through schooling or time on the job, and you gain that as you age.

0 - 4. Most of them just live at home with their parents and have no marketable skills.
