Acai berries are a grape-like fruit from Brazil that many believe aid weight loss. However, acai berry supplements are still unapproved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and there is no direct evidence the the berry can help weight loss.
While many people take acai pills hoping to achieve weight loss, the berry juice form has only been proven to have positive effects on the reduction of cancer cells. In a 2006 University of Florida study, instead of weight loss, researchers found that the berries contained cancer-fighting agents because of their high level of antioxidants. (see Reference 2).
If you choose to take acai pills, it is important to purchase them from a reputable source to reap the benefits, if any, of the health goal you are trying to acheive. Acai berry supplements that do not contain dangerous or undeclared ingredients are a safer choice. The FDA warns it is important that you consult your doctor before taking any diet supplement, to decrease negative interactions with other supplements or medications (see Reference1).
