My 6 year old (not afraid of damn near anything) found a spider in our yard...wanna know what it might have been (I had him step on it) :-)

Light brown, fat body, and on the belly has yellow and black markings that look like a pair of eyes? Legs are fairly short, body is 1/2" in diameter, found in St. Louis, MO

Not being afraid of anything is called innocence. Why would you teach him to fear, hate, and kill defenseless creatures one millionth his size? Spiders (like all living things) are to be respected, not feared.
