I know that bees die when they sting you because the stinger comes out with some of their intestines. But do wasps bite or sting? If they bite wouldn't they be able to keep alive after an attack? If they sting do they die like bees?

My many nests of paper wasps and mud daubers have had a complete die off this month (July). Why on earth would they die off now, while the weather is still very warm and there is plenty of prey for them to subsist on? I've never seen this before.
