Someone painted the stove top and ice box in my vintage travel trailer. How can I remove the paint so that it is the original color again?

When I turned on my stove to make coffee this morning it made a loud hissing sound and the flames from the burner were 12 to 16 inches high. What is happening here? I can turn it down and make coffee but this is weird. It is still acting up.
