Google-powered search on Answerbag!

posted September 1, 2009 09:55 AM Lex Friedman
We just unveiled a new search engine here on Answerbag. We've heard — and shared! — your complaints regarding Answerbag's search, which often provided suboptimal results.

Our new Google-powered search engine drives the accuracy of our search results up into the stratosphere. We're pretty excited about it.

There are some changes to how search works now — searching will search questions and answers, categories, and also profiles and other pages on the site.

Of course, we're very curious about your thoughts on this. We're considering the Google search engine here a trial while we gauge your feedback. Let us know what you think!

Very nice. I was using Google to find dupes I knew were out there. I hope this takes care of the problem. I'll let you know when I've used it a few times. ;-)

Well done. I think this was a good move. So far I've conducted some test searches and mostly have had positive results.

I hope this cuts down somewhat the number of duplicate questions on the site. Keep up the good work with this kind of improvements.
Please don't forget to keep working on solving glitches such as the difficult time most of us have to upload pictures in answers.

Great idea. Well done. Still need to explore this new search engine but I like the concept a lot. I echo the important comments regarding dupes mentioned by my compatriots.

Hey! This is Answerbag, not Googlebag!

Just kidding, but the staff ought to register http://www.GoogleBag.com/ before someone else snatches it up.

Edit; addendum: Aww, too late! It's become some kind of Pakistani portal.

Well cover me with eggs and flour and bake me for forty minutes!
Google is taking hold of answerbag too...to all yahoo fans out here, run while you still can! Google is unforgiving to you and your kin!
I say we organise some resistance to the google Overlords! Drive them back to where the belong!
The first step would be to secure an alliance with Yahoo...let them come! Whittle them down then strike back! I'm sure we will prevail!
I think the narrow pass in the entertainment category would be a good place to stand! Victory, or the loss of internet connection!

Since you did that I can't search my own questions. You know, the "search my questions" box under the comment and answer lights.

Thanks Lex. Just a big pain in the butt having to search through 100's of questions to find what your looking for. I really liked that feature.

Hi Lex, this is a system issue, not a comment to the post, and I know some work was being done to change expeditious posts before I took a hiatus a year ago...

On the homepage, (Social) at the bottom, I click "See unanswered questions..." and I get a list of questions ANSWERED... from March 2009... 2nd page is more of the same, not a single unanswered question. Can you look into this?

GreenFreak says screw this: Sep. 3, 02:51 PM

hm.. the search is definitely improved, but how do I categories now? It seems that it's impossible to search for categories which is a huge setback - its practically impossible to find many of the categories already

Excellent! Your own search works pretty well, but as you know, only searches questions, not answers. I've gone to Google when I needed to search for answers, and this will make it more convenient. Thanks!

I actually like this a lot. The fact that it searches for answers and comments as well as questions is great. Of course, I've only used it for searching my screen name so far, because I'm the only thing I think about, but it was still really good.

Next stop: mesosphere.

Is anyone else having the same problem I have (see comment above) with the link "See unanswered questions..." on the homepage? It stopped working yesterday (delivering unanswered questions) for me; I know it worked two days ago as I asked a question about it.

Kool idea AB!

On another note:

Sometimes, while using FireFox I am not allowed to log in, it sends me back to the home page. But I can log in with IE.

One teensy problem - the new search does not find categories like the old one did. Maybe that can be fixed?
